Amano Shrimp

The Amano Shrimp (*Caridina multidentata*), also known as the Yamato Numa Ebi, is a popular freshwater shrimp species among aquarists. Renowned for its algae-eating capabilities and peaceful nature, the Amano Shrimp is an excellent addition to community tanks and aquascapes.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Amano Shrimp typically grow to about 5-6 cm (2-2.4 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: They are primarily transparent with a greenish tint, featuring a distinctive pattern of white spots along their bodies, which adds to their appeal.
  • Body Shape: The body is slender and elongated, with a smooth exoskeleton that allows them to blend well into their environment.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Amano Shrimp are generally peaceful and can coexist well with a variety of tankmates, including small fish and other invertebrates.
  • Activity Level: These shrimp are active and social, often seen foraging for food and interacting with their environment.
  • Community Behaviour: They thrive in community tanks and help maintain cleanliness by consuming algae and detritus.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Amano Shrimp, although larger tanks provide better water quality and more space for foraging.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Amano Shrimp thrive in warm waters, with an ideal temperature range of 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 4-8 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is ideal. Amano Shrimp appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots, as live plants provide cover and mimic their natural habitat.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is best for showcasing their colours and promoting plant growth.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as strong currents can stress shrimp. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential for maintaining water quality.

Diet:

Amano Shrimp are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive:

  • Pellets: High-quality sinking pellets designed for shrimp or bottom feeders should form the staple of their diet.
  • Algae and Vegetation: They naturally feed on algae, so providing algae wafers or blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini can enhance their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer occasional treats of live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp or daphnia for protein.

Tankmates:

Amano Shrimp can be housed with various peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Ember Tetras.
  • Peaceful Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras.
  • Other Shrimp: Other peaceful shrimp species, like Cherry Shrimp.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species or larger fish that may see them as prey.

Breeding:

Breeding Amano Shrimp can be more complex than other shrimp species due to their specific requirements:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with stable water parameters is ideal. The water should be warm (around 22°C to 26°C or 72°F to 79°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-7.5).
  • Spawning Behaviour: Females carry eggs until they hatch, typically after several weeks. The larvae require brackish water to develop properly, making breeding in a standard freshwater tank challenging.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry hatch, they need to be moved to a suitable environment with brackish water for growth.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are essential for the health of Amano Shrimp.
  • Stress Levels: Providing plenty of hiding spots and a well-planted tank will help reduce stress and promote a healthy environment.
