The Pygmy Corydora

The Pygmy Corydora (*Corydoras pygmaeus*) is a small, peaceful freshwater fish known for its adorable appearance and social behavior. This tiny catfish is native to the rivers and streams of South America, where it thrives in schools and makes a charming addition to community aquariums.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Pygmy Corydoras typically grow to about 3-4 cm (1.2-1.6 inches) in length, making them one of the smallest species in the Corydoras family.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: They have a slender, streamlined body that is generally light brown or beige, often adorned with small dark spots or speckles.
    • Fins: Their fins are usually translucent, and the dorsal fin has a slight extension, adding to their delicate appearance.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Pygmy Corydoras are peaceful and sociable fish, making them excellent community tank inhabitants. They are non-aggressive and coexist well with other small, peaceful species.
  • Activity Level: These fish are active swimmers, often seen foraging along the substrate for food. They thrive in groups and exhibit interesting social behaviors when kept in schools of six or more.
  • Community Behavior: Pygmy Corydoras are generally shy and may prefer to stay near the bottom of the tank or among plants and decorations for cover. They are best kept with similar-sized, non-aggressive fish.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 liters (10 gallons) is recommended for a small school of Pygmy Corydoras to ensure they have enough space to swim and forage.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Pygmy Corydoras thrive in water temperatures between 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 2-12 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate, such as sand or fine gravel, is recommended to protect their delicate barbels. Providing plenty of hiding spots with plants, driftwood, and rocks helps create a natural environment.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is best for highlighting their colors while providing shaded areas with plants or decorations.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as strong currents can stress Pygmy Corydoras. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential to maintain water quality.

Diet:

  • Pygmy Corydoras are omnivores and require a varied diet to thrive. Their diet should include:
    • Pellets: High-quality sinking pellets formulated for bottom feeders should form the staple of their diet.
    • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
    • Vegetable Matter: Incorporate blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach to ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

  • Pygmy Corydoras can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates. Suitable tankmates include:
    • Small, peaceful fish: Such as Neon Tetras, Rasboras, or Guppies.
    • Other Corydoras species: Keeping them with other small Corydoras can enhance their social behavior.
    • Shrimp or snails: Peaceful invertebrates like Amano shrimp or Nerite snails can coexist well with Pygmy Corydoras.
