The Pictus Catfish
The Pictus Catfish (*Pimelodus pictus*) is a popular species of freshwater catfish known for its striking appearance and lively behavior. With its unique spotted pattern and playful nature, the Pictus Catfish makes a fascinating addition to community tanks.
Physical Characteristics:
- Size: Pictus Catfish can grow to about 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) in length.
- Coloration:
- Body: The body is typically a silver or light gray color, adorned with distinct black spots that give it a unique appearance.
- Fins: The fins are transparent with a slightly darker edge, and the caudal fin is forked.
- Shape: Pictus Catfish have a streamlined body shape, which aids in their agile swimming.
Behavior:
- Temperament: Pictus Catfish are generally peaceful but can be territorial. They do best in groups of three or more.
- Activity Level: These catfish are very active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment, often seen darting around the tank.
- Community Behavior: While they can be kept in community tanks, it's important to ensure that tankmates are of similar size and temperament to avoid bullying or stress.
Aquarium Care:
- Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 150 liters (40 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Pictus Catfish to provide adequate swimming space.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: Pictus Catfish thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 23°C to 28°C (73°F to 82°F).
- pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5-15 dGH, is ideal.
- Tank Setup:
- Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended to prevent injury to their sensitive barbels. Pictus Catfish appreciate a well-decorated tank with hiding spots created by rocks, driftwood, and plants.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is best, with shaded areas provided by plants or decorations.
- Filtration: A strong filtration system is essential, as Pictus Catfish produce a moderate amount of waste. Regular water changes (about 25% weekly) are important for maintaining water quality.
Diet:
- Pictus Catfish are carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet to thrive. Their diet should include:
- Pellets: High-quality sinking pellets designed for catfish should form the staple of their diet.
- Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
- Occasional Treats: Freeze-dried foods can be offered occasionally but should not make up the main diet.
Tankmates:
- Pictus Catfish can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates that share similar water parameters. Suitable tankmates include:
- Larger Community fish: Such as Angelfish, Sillver Dollar, Rainbows.
- Other catfish: Larger species of catfish can coexist well.
- Bottom-dwellers: Other peaceful bottom-dwellers that won’t compete for space.
