Baryancistrus demantoides Care Guide

Description

Baryancistrus demantoides, commonly known as the Hi Fin green phantom pleco, is a stunning freshwater catfish from the Orinoco River in Venezuela.

It features a vibrant green body with yellowish fins and grows up to 15 cm, living for 8-12 years in ideal conditions.

Habitat Setup

A 200-liter (50-gallon) tank or larger is recommended.

Provide a rocky aquascape with caves, driftwood, and moderate water flow to mimic its natural habitat.

A soft sandy or fine gravel substrate is ideal. Water should be warm (26-30°C), with a pH of 6.5-7.5 and strong filtration with high oxygenation.

Diet & Feeding

This species is omnivorous with a preference for algae.

Feed a diet rich in algae wafers, fresh vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, spinach), and protein sources like frozen bloodworms or shrimp.

Avoid overfeeding high-protein foods to prevent digestive issues.

Behavior & Tank Mates

Generally peaceful but territorial, especially towards other plecos.

It coexists well with tetras, peaceful cichlids, and other bottom dwellers but should not be housed with aggressive species.

Provide multiple hiding spots to reduce territorial disputes.

Health & Maintenance

This species requires excellent water quality, so perform regular water changes (30-40% weekly) and ensure proper oxygenation.

Watch for common pleco issues such as bloating, fin damage, or skin infections.

Final Tips

Baryancistrus demantoides is a beautiful and rewarding pleco that thrives in well-oxygenated, structured aquariums.

Providing ample hiding spots, a proper diet, and high water quality ensures their health and vibrant coloration. ????????
