Caridina Dennerli

The Caridina Dennerli, commonly known as the Crystal Red Shrimp or simply Dennerli Shrimp, is a striking freshwater shrimp species highly sought after by aquarists for its vibrant colours and unique patterns. Native to the freshwater environments of Southeast Asia, this shrimp adds beauty and biological benefits to community tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Caridina Dennerli typically grows to about 2.5-3.5 cm (1-1.4 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: This shrimp is renowned for its vivid red and white coloration, which can vary between individuals. The contrast between the bright red and the white creates a stunning visual effect.
  • Body Shape: They have a slender and elongated body shape typical of dwarf shrimp, with a smooth exoskeleton that highlights their vibrant colours.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Caridina Dennerli shrimp are generally peaceful and can coexist well with other small, non-aggressive tankmates. They are social creatures and thrive in groups.
  • Activity Level: These shrimp are active and curious, often seen foraging for food and exploring their environment.
  • Community Behaviour: They do well in community tanks with a variety of peaceful fish and invertebrates, but care should be taken to avoid larger or aggressive species that may pose a threat.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 20 litres (5 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Caridina Dennerli, but larger tanks are preferable for stable water parameters and more space for foraging.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: They thrive in cooler waters, with an ideal temperature range of 20°C to 24°C (68°F to 75°F).
    • pH: Caridina Dennerli prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: They prefer soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 4-8 dGH.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft, fine substrate is ideal. Live plants, rocks, and driftwood should be included to provide hiding spots and grazing areas.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable, as it helps plants grow and showcases the shrimp's colours.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as strong currents can stress the shrimp. Sponge filters or low-flow filters are ideal. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are crucial for maintaining water quality.

Diet:

Caridina Dennerli are omnivorous and require a varied diet for optimal health:

  • Pellets: High-quality sinking pellets designed for shrimp or bottom feeders should form the staple of their diet.
  • Vegetable Matter: Blanched vegetables like spinach, zucchini, or algae wafers can be offered to supplement their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer occasional treats of live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp or daphnia for protein.

Tankmates:

Caridina Dennerli can be housed with various peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Ember Tetras.
  • Peaceful Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras.
  • Other Dwarf Shrimp: Other peaceful shrimp species, like Cherry Shrimp.

Avoid housing them with aggressive fish or larger species that may see them as prey.

Breeding:

Breeding Caridina Dennerli can be an exciting experience for aquarists:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with stable water parameters is ideal. The water should be warm (around 22°C to 24°C or 72°F to 75°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-7.5).
  • Spawning Behaviour: Females will carry eggs under their tails until they hatch, usually taking 2-3 weeks depending on water conditions.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or finely crushed flake food.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are essential for the health of Caridina Dennerli.
  • Stress Levels: Providing plenty of hiding spots and a well-planted tank will help reduce stress and promote a healthy environment.
