Description

  • Size: Koi Rice Fish grow to about 2.5–4 cm in length.

  • Color: The “koi” variety features bright orange, white, and red patterns, resembling miniature koi carp.

  • Behavior: Peaceful and social, they are best kept in groups of 5 or more. They are active swimmers and usually occupy the top and middle levels of the aquarium.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size

  • A minimum of 20 litres is suitable for a small group, though 40+ litres is ideal for stability and space.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: Very adaptable — they thrive in 18–26°C, making them suitable for unheated tanks or outdoor tubs in mild climates.

  • pH: Slightly alkaline to neutral, ideally 7.0 to 8.0.

  • KH (Carbonate Hardness): Best kept between 4–8 dKH to maintain stable pH.

  • Hardness: Moderate to hard water is preferred, around 6–20 dGH.

  • Water Quality: Hardy, but prefer clean, stable conditions. Do weekly water changes of 20–30% and use a gentle filter.

Diet

  • Koi Rice Fish are omnivores and easy to feed:

    • Micropellets or high-quality flakes

    • Live/frozen foods like baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and microworms

    • They’ll also pick at algae or accept blanched greens occasionally

Feed small portions once or twice per day.

Tank Setup

  • Substrate: Any type is fine — sand, fine gravel, or bare-bottom.

  • Aquascaping: Include live or silk plants, especially floating types, and decor for cover.

  • Lighting: Moderate to bright is fine. They look great under natural-style lighting, especially in planted tanks.

  • Water Movement: They prefer gentle to moderate flow.

Tank Mates

  • Peaceful and small — good companions include:

    • Shrimp (e.g., Cherry, Amano)

    • Snails

    • Other peaceful fish like Pygmy Corydoras, White Cloud Mountain Minnows

  • Avoid large or aggressive fish that might nip or eat them.

Breeding

  • Very easy to breed:

    • Females carry visible eggs under the belly before depositing them on plants or spawning mops.

    • Adults may eat the eggs — so move parents or eggs to a separate tank if you want to raise fry.

    • Fry hatch within a week and can be fed infusoria, powdered fry food, or baby brine shrimp.

Summary

  • Oryzias latipes (Koi Rice Fish) are peaceful, hardy, and ideal for beginners.

  • Keep in groups of 5 or more, in tanks of 20–40+ litres.
