Description

  • Size: Espei Rasboras typically grow to about 1.5 to 2 inches (4–5 cm).

  • Color: These fish are known for their vibrant orange-red body with a black triangular marking near their dorsal fin. They have a sleek, slender shape and a peaceful nature.

  • Behavior: Espei Rasboras are peaceful, active, and enjoy swimming in small schools. They are ideal for community tanks and are often found swimming in the middle levels of the aquarium.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size

  • A minimum of 10 gallons (38 liters) is recommended for a small group of 6 or more Espei Rasboras. Larger tanks (20 gallons or more) are even better, as they provide more space for swimming.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: They thrive in warm water, between 74°F and 80°F (23°C to 27°C).

  • pH: A slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.0 to 7.5.

  • KH (Carbonate Hardness): A KH range of 3 to 6 dKH is ideal, helping to maintain stable pH levels and keeping the fish comfortable.

  • Hardness: Soft to moderate water hardness (4–12 dGH) is best.

  • Water Quality: Espei Rasboras require clean, well-oxygenated water. Perform 20–30% weekly water changes and use a good filter to maintain water quality.

Diet

  • Espei Rasboras are omnivores, and their diet should include:

    • High-quality flakes or pellets for small community fish

    • Live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms

    • Blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini as an occasional treat

  • They also graze on small amounts of algae in the tank.

Tank Setup

  • Substrate: A fine gravel or sand substrate works well, though they are not too picky.

  • Aquascaping: Provide plants (live or silk) and decorations that offer plenty of swimming space and hiding spots.

These rasboras prefer to have some areas of the tank with dense planting, especially around the sides and background.

  • Lighting: Moderate lighting is perfect for them. A natural day/night cycle helps them feel comfortable.

  • Water Movement: They prefer low to moderate water flow. A gentle filter works well to maintain a calm environment.

Tank Mates

  • Espei Rasboras are peaceful and do well with a variety of other peaceful community fish, such as:

    • Tetras (e.g., Neon Tetras, Cardinal Tetras)

    • Corydoras Catfish

    • Shrimp (like Cherry Shrimp)

    • Snails

  • Avoid keeping them with large or aggressive fish that might stress them out.

Breeding

  • Breeding Espei Rasboras in captivity can be tricky, but it’s possible with the right setup.

To breed, create a separate breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water and provide plenty of plants for the female to lay eggs.

After spawning, remove the parents to prevent them from eating the eggs.

The fry need special care, such as infusoria or baby brine shrimp, for feeding.

Summary

  • Espei Rasboras are small, active, and peaceful fish that thrive in schools of 6 or more in 10 gallons or larger tanks.

  • They prefer warm water (74°F to 80°F) with a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 and a KH of 3 to 6 dKH.

  • They are omnivores, eating high-quality flakes, pellets, live/frozen foods, and occasional vegetables.

  • These rasboras are great tank mates for peaceful species like Tetras, Corydoras, and Shrimp.

  • Provide low to moderate water flow and plenty of plants for hiding.
