The Panda Corydora

The Panda Corydora (*Corydoras panda*) is a popular species of freshwater catfish known for its striking black and white coloration, resembling the appearance of a panda. This small, peaceful fish is a favorite among aquarists due to its charming behavior and ability to thrive in community tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Panda Corydoras typically grow to about 5-7 cm (2-2.8 inches) in length.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: The body of the Panda Corydora is predominantly white or cream-colored with distinct black markings. These markings typically include a black patch over the eyes and another on the dorsal fin.
    • Fins: Their fins are usually transparent, with the dorsal fin having a slight black edge.
  • Shape: Panda Corydoras have a stout, rounded body with a flattened underside, which is characteristic of the Corydoras genus.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Panda Corydoras are peaceful and social fish that prefer to be kept in groups. They are not aggressive and get along well with other community fish.
  • Activity Level: These fish are active and curious swimmers, often seen foraging on the substrate for food. They tend to stay at the bottom of the tank but will occasionally venture to mid-water.
  • Community Behavior: Panda Corydoras thrive in groups of at least 5-6 individuals, as they are social creatures and feel more secure in a school.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 60 liters (15 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Panda Corydoras to provide adequate space for swimming and social interaction.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: They thrive in a temperature range of 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F).
    • pH: Panda Corydoras prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-10 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate, such as fine gravel or sand, is recommended to protect their sensitive barbels. Live plants, driftwood, and smooth rocks provide hiding spots and enrich their environment.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable for showcasing their colors and providing a comfortable environment.
    • Filtration: A good filtration system is essential for maintaining water quality. They prefer gentle water flow, so sponge filters or low-flow filters are ideal.

Diet:

  • Panda Corydoras are omnivorous and require a varied diet to maintain their health. Their diet should include:
    • Pellets: High-quality sinking pellets designed for catfish should form the staple of their diet.
    • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia for essential protein and variety.
    • Vegetable Matter: Occasionally provide blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach to ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

  • Panda Corydoras can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates. Suitable tankmates include:
    • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Ember Tetras.
    • Livebearers: Guppies or Platies make good companions.
    • Other Peaceful Fish: Such as Rasboras or small Gouramis.
