  • Model: GUENTHER'S RED TAIL KILLIFISH PAIR

Guenther's Red Tail Killifish (Aphyosemion guentheri), also known as the Guenther's Killifish or simply the Red Tail Killifish, is a strikingly beautiful freshwater species known for its vibrant coloration and relatively easy care requirements. Originating from East Africa, particularly in regions of Kenya and Tanzania, these fish are a popular choice among aquarists due to their vivid colors, interesting behavior, and ease of breeding.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Guenther's Red Tail Killifish typically grows to about 5-6 cm (2-2.5 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: Males are particularly colorful, with a brilliant blue-green body adorned with red spots or lines. The tail fin is usually bright red, which is where the fish gets its common name. The fins can also have red, orange, or yellow hues with intricate patterns. Females are generally less colorful, with a more subdued brownish or gray body.
  • Fins: The dorsal, anal, and caudal (tail) fins are elongated in males, often displaying vibrant color patterns, making them visually appealing in aquariums.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Guenther's Red Tail Killifish is peaceful and can be kept with other small, non-aggressive species. However, males may display territorial behavior, particularly toward other males of the same species.
  • Schooling Behavior: While these fish can be kept in groups, it's best to maintain a ratio of one male to several females to reduce aggressive interactions between males.
  • Activity: These fish are active swimmers, often staying near the middle and top levels of the tank. They can be shy initially, but they become more confident once settled into their environment.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A tank of at least 40 liters (10 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Guenther's Red Tail Killifish. Larger tanks are preferable for maintaining stable water conditions and to reduce territorial disputes.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Guenther's Red Tail Killifish prefers slightly cooler water than many tropical fish, with an ideal temperature range of 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F).
    • pH: They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: They prefer soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 4-10 dGH.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A dark substrate is ideal to contrast their colors, and the tank should be well-planted with live plants, driftwood, and caves to provide hiding spots. Killifish are often found in shaded areas, so plants and decorations that create shaded areas are beneficial.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is sufficient, as bright lighting may make them feel exposed. Floating plants can help diffuse the light and provide them with a more comfortable environment.
  • Filtration: Use a gentle filtration system to maintain water quality, as Guenther's Killifish prefers calm waters without strong currents.

Diet:

Guenther's Red Tail Killifish are carnivorous and thrive on a diet of small, live, or frozen foods. Their diet should include:

  • Live or Frozen Foods: Bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and mosquito larvae are excellent food options that stimulate natural feeding behavior and enhance their coloration.
  • High-Quality Flakes or Pellets: While they prefer live or frozen foods, they can be fed high-quality micro-pellets or flakes designed for carnivorous fish. It’s best to supplement their diet with live foods whenever possible.

Feed them small portions 2-3 times a day, making sure not to overfeed to prevent water quality issues.

Tankmates:

Guenther's Red Tail Killifish are peaceful and can coexist with other small, non-aggressive species. Suitable tankmates include:

  • Small tetras (e.g., Neon Tetras, Ember Tetras)
  • Corydoras catfish
  • Rasboras
  • Dwarf shrimp (provided the shrimp are not too small)

Avoid keeping them with large or aggressive species that may stress or harm them.

Breeding:

Guenther's Red Tail Killifish are relatively easy to breed in captivity, and they are known as annual killifish, meaning they have a life cycle that can adapt to seasonal changes in the wild.

  • Spawning Behavior: Males display vibrant colors and will court females by showing off their fins and performing a dance. After courtship, the female will lay eggs, often in the substrate or on plant leaves.
  • Breeding Setup: To encourage breeding, a separate breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water is ideal. Use spawning mops or fine-leaved plants as surfaces for egg-laying.
  • Eggs and Fry Care: Once the eggs are laid, they can be removed to a separate container or left in the breeding tank. The eggs typically hatch in about 2-3 weeks. The fry can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.
  • Annual Behavior in Nature: In the wild, these fish live in temporary bodies of water that dry up seasonally, so they have adapted to laying eggs that can survive dry periods. In an aquarium, their eggs do not need to go through a dry phase, but this adaptation makes them unique among killifish.

Special Considerations:

  • Short Lifespan: Guenther's Red Tail Killifish are relatively short-lived, typically living for about 1-2 years in captivity. This is due to their adaptation to seasonal environments in the wild. Regular breeding ensures you always have a new generation of fish in your tank.
  • Jumping: These fish are known to jump, so it’s essential to have a tightly fitting lid on your aquarium to prevent them from escaping.
