Spotted Hillstream Loach

The Spotted Hillstream Loach (Beaufortia kweichowensis) is a unique and fascinating freshwater species, well-known for its flattened body and ability to cling to surfaces in fast-flowing water. With its mottled pattern and distinctive shape, this loach is a standout addition to aquariums designed to replicate riverine environments.

Physical Characteristics:

Size: Spotted Hillstream Loaches typically grow to around 5–7 cm (2–3 inches) in length.
Coloration:
Body: Mottled pattern in shades of brown, grey, and black, providing natural camouflage against rocky substrates.
Fins: Wide, flat pectoral and pelvic fins adapted for clinging to surfaces.
Shape: Flattened, streamlined body designed for life in fast-flowing water.

Behaviour:

Temperament: Peaceful and non-aggressive, suitable for community aquariums.
Activity Level: Active and constantly grazing, often seen attached to rocks and glass surfaces.
Community Behaviour: Best kept in small groups of 3 or more to encourage natural behaviour and reduce stress.

Aquarium Care:

Tank Size: A minimum of 40 litres is recommended, with larger tanks preferred for stability and flow.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 20°C to 24°C (68°F to 75°F)
pH: 6.5 to 7.5
Hardness: 4–12 dGH
Tank Setup:
Substrate and Decorations: Fine gravel or sand substrate with plenty of smooth rocks and driftwood for grazing and shelter.
Lighting: Moderate lighting with shaded areas to reduce stress.
Filtration: Strong filtration with high oxygenation is essential to replicate natural stream conditions.

Diet:

Spotted Hillstream Loaches are omnivores with a preference for grazing:
Algae-Based Foods: Algae wafers and spirulina tablets.
Live or Frozen Foods: Bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
Vegetation: Occasional blanched vegetables such as spinach or zucchini.
They will also naturally graze on algae and biofilm within the aquarium.

Tankmates:

Ideal for peaceful community tanks:
Compatible with tetras, rasboras, danios, Corydoras, and shrimp species.
Avoid aggressive or large fish that may outcompete them or cause stress.

Breeding:

Breeding Setup: Replicating fast-flowing, well-oxygenated conditions is key.
Spawning Behaviour: Likely to lay eggs on rocks in strong current environments.
Fry Care: Breeding in captivity is rare, and detailed care requirements are not well documented.

Special Considerations:

Water Flow: Requires strong water movement to mimic natural habitat.
Oxygenation: High oxygen levels are essential for health.
Surface Grazing: Provide ample surfaces for algae and biofilm growth.
Water Quality: Sensitive to poor conditions, requiring regular maintenance and stable parameters.
