Starry Night Pleco (L-59)

The Starry Night Pleco (*Hypancistrus sp.*) is a striking freshwater fish known for its unique colouration and beautiful markings. This species is especially popular among aquarium enthusiasts for its eye-catching appearance and beneficial algae-eating habits.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Starry Night Plecos typically grow to about 10-12 cm (4-5 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: They are characterised by a dark body, usually black or dark brown, adorned with bright white or yellow spots, which gives them a starry appearance.
  • Fins: Their fins are relatively short but well-proportioned, contributing to their streamlined look.
  • Shape: The body is flat and broad, typical of many pleco species, allowing them to navigate through tight spaces and under decorations.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Starry Night Plecos are generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of tankmates. They are primarily nocturnal and may be shy during the day.
  • Activity Level: They are active swimmers, especially at night, when they explore their surroundings and graze on algae.
  • Community Behavior: These fish can be housed in community tanks but should be kept with peaceful tankmates to avoid stress or territorial behaviour.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 80 liters (20 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Starry Night Plecos, although larger tanks are preferable for stable water conditions.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Starry Night Plecos thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 4-10 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended. Starry Night Plecos enjoy a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots, such as caves and driftwood, which mimic their natural habitat.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal, as they can be shy in brightly lit tanks. Providing shaded areas will help them feel more secure.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as strong currents can stress these fish. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential for maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

Diet:

Starry Night Plecos are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive. Their diet should include:

  • Algae Wafers: High-quality algae wafers should form the staple of their diet.
  • Vegetable Matter: Including blanched vegetables, such as zucchini or spinach, can help ensure a balanced diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms occasionally to provide essential protein and variety.

Tankmates:

Starry Night Plecos can be housed with various peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Rummy Nose Tetras.
  • Peaceful Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras.
  • Other Algae Eaters: Such as Otocinclus or other peaceful bottom-dwellers.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species or fin-nippers, as this can lead to stress or injury.

Breeding:

Breeding Starry Night Plecos in captivity can be challenging, but understanding their breeding habits is beneficial:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with plenty of hiding spots is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26-28°C or 79-82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.5-7.0).
  • Spawning Behavior: Males will court females and, after spawning, the female will lay eggs on a flat surface or plant leaves.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or finely crushed flakes.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of Starry Night Plecos.
  • Shy Nature: These fish can be shy, particularly in brightly lit tanks. Providing plenty of hiding spots can help them feel more secure.
