Panda Loach
The Panda Loach (Yaoshania pachychilus) is a distinctive and highly sought-after freshwater species, recognised for its striking black and white markings resembling a panda. Native to fast-flowing streams in China, this peaceful and social fish is a favourite among aquarists looking to add both visual contrast and activity to a well-maintained community aquarium.
Physical Characteristics:
Size: Panda Loaches typically grow to around 6–8 cm (2.5–3 inches) in length.
Coloration:
Body: Light base colour with bold black markings across the head and body, creating a panda-like pattern.
Fins: Generally translucent with subtle dark edging.
Shape: Slender, elongated body with a slightly flattened underside, adapted for bottom-dwelling behaviour. Barbels are present to aid in locating food.
Behaviour:
Temperament: Peaceful and sociable, making them ideal for community aquariums.
Activity Level: Active and curious, often seen foraging along the substrate and exploring their surroundings.
Community Behaviour: A social species that should be kept in groups of at least 4 or more to encourage natural behaviour and reduce stress.
Aquarium Care:
Tank Size: A minimum of 40 litres is recommended for a small group, though larger tanks provide better stability and space.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 18°C to 22°C (75°F to 82°F)
pH: 6.5 to 7.5
Hardness: 3–10 dGH
Tank Setup:
Substrate and Decorations: A soft sand or fine gravel substrate is ideal, with rocks, driftwood, and plants to provide shelter and mimic natural habitats.
Lighting: Moderate lighting with shaded areas for comfort.
Filtration: Gentle to moderate filtration with clean, well-oxygenated water. Regular water changes are essential.
Diet:
Panda Loaches are omnivorous scavengers and require a varied diet:
Pellets: High-quality sinking pellets for bottom feeders.
Live or Frozen Foods: Bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia for protein.
Vegetable Matter: Blanched vegetables such as spinach, zucchini, or cucumber.
Feed 1–2 times daily in appropriate portions.
Tankmates:
Panda Loaches are well-suited to peaceful community aquariums:
Compatible with small fish such as tetras, rasboras, and guppies.
Can also be housed with other peaceful bottom-dwellers like Corydoras.
Avoid aggressive species or fin-nippers that may cause stress.
Breeding:
Breeding Setup: A separate tank with shallow water and plenty of hiding spaces.
Spawning Behaviour: Eggs are laid on surfaces such as plants or décor and fertilised by the male.
Fry Care: Fry should be fed infusoria or finely crushed food until they are large enough to accept larger foods.
Special Considerations:
Water Quality: Sensitive to poor water conditions, requiring consistent maintenance and stable parameters.
Social Requirement: Should always be kept in groups to prevent stress and promote natural behaviour.
Environment: Thrives in clean, well-structured aquariums with ample hiding places and gentle flow.
