Striped Hillstream Loach
The Striped Hillstream Loach (Sewellia lineolata), often referred to as the Zebra Hillstream Loach, is a visually striking freshwater species known for its intricate striped pattern and unique body shape. Native to fast-flowing streams, this peaceful bottom-dweller is highly valued for its ability to cling to surfaces and its suitability for well-oxygenated, river-style aquariums.
Physical Characteristics:
Size: Striped Hillstream Loaches typically grow to around 6–8 cm (2.5–3 inches) in length.
Coloration:
Body: Light beige or tan base colour with dark brown or black zebra-like striping across the body.
Fins: Broad, flattened fins adapted for gripping surfaces in strong currents.
Shape: Flattened body with wide pectoral fins, allowing them to adhere to rocks and glass.
Behaviour:
Temperament: Peaceful and non-aggressive, making them suitable for community aquariums.
Activity Level: Active grazers, often seen attached to surfaces feeding on algae and biofilm.
Community Behaviour: Best kept in small groups of 3 or more to encourage natural behaviour.
Aquarium Care:
Tank Size: A minimum of 40 litres is recommended, though larger tanks (75 litres or more) are preferred for stability and flow.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 78°F)
pH: 6.5 to 7.5
Hardness: 4–12 dGH
Tank Setup:
Substrate and Decorations: Fine gravel or sand substrate with plenty of smooth rocks, driftwood, and surfaces for grazing.
Lighting: Moderate lighting with shaded areas for comfort.
Filtration: Strong filtration with high oxygenation to replicate fast-flowing stream conditions.
Diet:
Striped Hillstream Loaches are omnivores with a strong preference for algae and biofilm:
Algae-Based Foods: Algae wafers and spirulina tablets.
Live or Frozen Foods: Bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
Vegetation: Occasional blanched vegetables such as spinach or zucchini.
They will also graze naturally on algae and biofilm present in the aquarium.
Tankmates:
Suitable for peaceful community aquariums:
Compatible with small tetras, Corydoras, rasboras, danios, shrimp, and snails.
Avoid large or aggressive species that may cause stress or outcompete them.
Breeding:
Breeding Setup: Requires cool, highly oxygenated water with strong current and rocky surfaces.
Spawning Behaviour: Likely to spawn over rocks in flowing water conditions.
Special Considerations:
Water Flow: Requires strong water movement to mimic natural stream habitats.
Oxygen Levels: High oxygenation is essential for long-term health.
Surface Grazing: Provide ample surfaces for algae and biofilm growth.
Water Quality: Sensitive to poor conditions, requiring regular maintenance and stable parameters.
