White Claw Towuti Crab

The White Claw Towuti Crab (*Potamonautes spp.*) is a fascinating freshwater crab species native to Lake Towuti in Sulawesi, Indonesia. Known for its unique appearance and interesting behaviour, it is a captivating addition to any freshwater aquarium.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Adult White Claw Towuti Crabs typically reach sizes of 5-8 cm (2-3 inches) across the carapace.
  • Coloration: This species is characterised by its striking colouration, with a predominantly dark brown or black body, complemented by distinct white or light-coloured claws. The contrast between the body and claws makes them visually appealing.
  • Claws: The claws are relatively large and robust, used for both defence and foraging. Their white coloration stands out against the darker body.
  • Shape: The body is broad and laterally compressed, which is typical for freshwater crabs, allowing them to navigate their aquatic habitat effectively.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: White Claw Towuti Crabs are generally peaceful but can exhibit territorial behaviour, particularly towards their own kind. They can coexist with other species as long as there is enough space and hiding spots.
  • Activity Level: These crabs are moderately active, spending much of their time exploring and foraging within the tank.
  • Community Behaviour: While they can be kept with various peaceful tankmates, care should be taken to avoid aggressive species that may provoke them.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 gallons) is recommended for a single White Claw Towuti Crab, with larger tanks preferred for groups or additional species.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: They thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: A slightly acidic to neutral pH range of 6.5 to 7.5 is optimal.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-10 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended, along with plenty of hiding spots created using rocks, driftwood, and live plants to mimic their natural habitat.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable, as it helps showcase their colours without causing stress.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as strong currents can stress the crabs. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential for maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

Diet:

White Claw Towuti Crabs are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive:

  • Pellets: High-quality sinking pellets designed for crustaceans should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia for essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: Including blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini can help ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

White Claw Towuti Crabs can be housed with various peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Rummy Nose Tetras.
  • Peaceful Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras.
  • Bottom-Dwellers: Corydoras catfish or other peaceful bottom-dwellers.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species or fin-nippers, as this can lead to stress or injury.

Breeding:

Breeding White Claw Towuti Crabs in captivity is challenging and requires specific conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with shallow water (about 10-15 cm or 4-6 inches) is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.5-7.5).
  • Spawning Behaviour: The male will court the female, and after spawning, the female will carry the fertilised eggs until they hatch.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of White Claw Towuti Crabs.
  • Habitat Needs: Providing ample hiding spots is essential, as these crabs can be shy and require secure places to retreat.
