White Leg Matano Crab

The White Leg Matano Crab (*Matano crab species*) is a captivating freshwater crab native to Lake Matano in Indonesia. Known for its striking appearance and unique behaviour, this species is a popular choice among aquarists looking for something different in their freshwater setups.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Adult White Leg Matano Crabs typically reach sizes of 6-10 cm (2.4-4 inches) across the carapace.
  • Coloration: This species is characterised by its light to dark brown body adorned with distinctive white legs and claws, providing a striking contrast that enhances its visual appeal.
  • Claws: The claws are relatively large and robust, with the white colouration making them stand out against the darker body.
  • Shape: The body is broad and laterally compressed, a typical trait for freshwater crabs that aids in navigating their habitat.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: White Leg Matano Crabs are generally peaceful but can exhibit territorial behaviour, particularly towards their own kind. They can coexist with other species as long as there is enough space and hiding spots.
  • Activity Level: These crabs are moderately active, spending much of their time exploring and foraging within the tank.
  • Community Behaviour: While they can be kept with various peaceful tankmates, care should be taken to avoid aggressive species that may provoke them.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 gallons) is recommended for a single White Leg Matano Crab, with larger tanks preferred for groups or additional species.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: They thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: A slightly acidic to neutral pH range of 6.5 to 7.5 is optimal.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-10 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended, along with plenty of hiding spots created using rocks, driftwood, and live plants to mimic their natural habitat.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable, as it helps showcase their colours without causing stress.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as strong currents can stress the crabs. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential for maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

Diet:

White Leg Matano Crabs are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive:

  • Pellets: High-quality sinking pellets designed for crustaceans should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia for essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: Including blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini can help ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

White Leg Matano Crabs can be housed with various peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Rummy Nose Tetras.
  • Peaceful Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras.
  • Bottom-Dwellers: Corydoras catfish or other peaceful bottom-dwellers.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species or fin-nippers, as this can lead to stress or injury.

Breeding:

Breeding White Leg Matano Crabs in captivity is challenging and requires specific conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with shallow water (about 10-15 cm or 4-6 inches) is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.5-7.5).
  • Spawning Behaviour: The male will court the female, and after spawning, the female will carry the fertilised eggs until they hatch.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of White Leg Matano Crabs.
  • Habitat Needs: Providing ample hiding spots is essential, as these crabs can be shy and require secure places to retreat.
