  • Model: AXOLOTL ALBINO

Albino Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum)

The Albino Axolotl is a striking variation of the Mexican Axolotl, known for its pale white or pinkish body and red or pink gills. This unique amphibian is a popular pet due to its distinctive appearance and fascinating biology.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Typically grows to about 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) in length.
  • Colouration: The albino variant features a creamy white body with a translucent appearance, and its gills are bright pink or red.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Generally calm and curious, axolotls are social creatures but are best kept alone or with non-aggressive tank mates to prevent stress or injury.
  • Activity Level: Mostly sedentary, they enjoy exploring their environment at a slow pace.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 60 litres (15 gallons) is recommended for a single axolotl.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 16°C to 18°C (60°F to 64°F) is ideal.
    • pH: Slightly acidic to neutral, between 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a spacious tank with hiding spots, using smooth rocks, plants, and substrate. Avoid sharp decorations that can injure their sensitive skin.

Diet:

Albino axolotls are carnivorous and should be fed a diet rich in protein. Suitable foods include:

  • High-quality pellets designed for carnivorous amphibians.
  • Live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and earthworms.

Tankmates:

Best kept alone, as axolotls can accidentally injure smaller fish or be stressed by aggressive tank mates. If you choose to keep them with others, opt for larger, peaceful species that won’t nip at their gills.

Breeding:

Breeding axolotls can be achieved in captivity, requiring specific conditions, including a separate breeding tank. After spawning, eggs will hatch in 10-14 days, depending on temperature.

Conservation Status:

The axolotl is critically endangered in the wild, primarily due to habitat loss and pollution. Conservation efforts are underway to protect their natural habitats.

In summary, the Albino Axolotl is a unique and captivating pet, known for its striking appearance and interesting behaviour. Proper care and attention to their specific needs will help ensure a healthy and thriving axolotl.
