Leucistic Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum)

The Leucistic Axolotl is a remarkable variant of the Mexican Axolotl, distinguished by its pale white or pinkish body, often with faint pigmentation and visible dark eyes. This variant is highly prized among aquarists for its unique appearance and captivating traits.

Physical Characteristics:

• Size: Typically grows to about 20-30 cm (8-12 inches) in length.
• Colouration: The leucistic axolotl has a predominantly white or pinkish body, with minimal pigmentations, giving it a striking and almost ethereal look. Its gills are usually a vibrant pink, enhancing its overall appeal.

Behaviour:

• Temperament: Leucistic axolotls are generally calm and inquisitive, making them social creatures that prefer to be kept alone or with non-aggressive tank mates to prevent stress.
• Activity Level: They are slow-moving and enjoy exploring their environment, often resting at the bottom of the tank or hiding among decorations.

Aquarium Care:

• Tank Size: A minimum of 60 litres (15 gallons) is recommended for a single axolotl.
• Water Parameters:
  • Temperature: Ideal range is 16°C to 18°C (60°F to 64°F).
  • pH: Preferably slightly acidic to neutral, between 6.5 to 7.5.
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water is best.
• Tank Setup: Provide a spacious tank with plenty of hiding spots using smooth rocks, plants, and substrate. Avoid sharp decorations that can damage their sensitive skin.

Diet:

Leucistic axolotls are carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet. Suitable foods include:

• High-quality pellets specifically formulated for carnivorous amphibians.
• Live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and earthworms.

Tankmates:

It is advisable to keep leucistic axolotls alone, as they can unintentionally harm smaller fish or be stressed by aggressive tank mates. If you decide to house them with others, opt for larger, peaceful species that will not nip at their gills.

Breeding:

Breeding axolotls can be done in captivity, requiring specific conditions including a separate breeding tank. After spawning, the eggs typically hatch in 10-14 days, depending on the water temperature.

Conservation Status:

While leucistic axolotls are popular in the aquarium trade, the species as a whole is critically endangered in the wild due to habitat loss and pollution. Conservation efforts are ongoing to protect their natural environments.
