Rotala rotundifolia from the family Lythraceae originates from South East Asia and can grow to a height of 15 cm - 30 cm. The Latin name means 'the plant with the round leaves', although only the marsh variety has leaves which are round in shape. When found within an aquarium the leaves are long and thin. R. rotundifolia is a relatively undemanding plant, although enjoys receiving direct light and needs high light intensity to produce red leaves. It will grow adequately in low light conditions, but the leaves will remain a bright green. When there is inadequate light, the lower regions may lose their leaves. R. rotundifolia forms side shoots easily, becoming compact and bushy. Trimming may be needed to stop over-shading of the lower leaves.
