The Swartz Corydora

The Swartz Corydora (*Corydoras swarzi*) is a charming freshwater fish known for its distinctive appearance and friendly nature. Native to the rivers and streams of South America, particularly Brazil, this species is a popular choice among aquarium enthusiasts for its social behavior and appealing coloration.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Swartz Corydoras typically grow to about 5-6 cm (2-2.4 inches) in length.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: They feature a light to dark brown body with striking black markings, including a distinctive black stripe along the lateral line and spots on their sides. This coloration gives them a unique and attractive appearance.
    • Fins: Their fins are typically transparent with slight dark edges, adding to their overall appeal.
  • Shape: The body is somewhat flattened and oval-shaped, which is characteristic of the corydoras genus.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Swartz Corydoras are peaceful and social fish, making them great community tank members. They are non-aggressive and do well in groups, often seen foraging together on the tank bottom.
  • Activity Level: These catfish are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment. They are often seen sifting through substrate for food, which mimics their natural behavior.
  • Community Behavior: Swartz Corydoras thrive in groups and should ideally be kept in schools of at least five to feel secure and display natural behavior.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 30 liters (8 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Swartz Corydoras.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: They thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: A slightly acidic to neutral pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 is preferred.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-12 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft, sandy substrate is recommended to protect their delicate barbels. Swartz Corydoras enjoy a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots. Live plants such as Java fern, Anubias, and floating plants provide cover and create a natural habitat.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is preferred, as they are native to slightly shaded environments. Floating plants can help create shaded areas in the tank.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended to maintain clean water without creating strong currents, as corydoras generally prefer calmer waters.

Diet:

  • Swartz Corydoras are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive. Their diet should include:
    • Pellets: High-quality sinking pellets formulated for bottom feeders should form the staple of their diet.
    • Live or Frozen Foods: They thrive on live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms, which provide essential protein and mimic their natural diet.
    • Vegetable Matter: Include plant-based foods such as spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables to ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

  • Swartz Corydoras can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates that share similar water parameters. Suitable tankmates include:
    • Small rasboras: Such as Harlequin Rasboras or Chili Rasboras.
    • Dwarf gouramis: Peaceful species like Sparkling Gouramis.
    • Other corydoras: Different species of corydoras can coexist well together.
    • Peaceful bottom-dwellers: Like Kuhli loaches.
