The Gold Severum

The Gold Severum (*Heros efasciatus*) is a striking freshwater cichlid native to the Amazon River basin in South America. Renowned for its vibrant golden coloration and unique personality, the Gold Severum is a popular choice among aquarists looking to add a lively and visually appealing fish to their aquarium.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Gold Severums typically grow to about 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) in length, making them a medium-sized cichlid species.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: The Gold Severum is characterized by its bright golden-yellow body, which can sometimes have shades of green or blue. The intensity of the yellow can vary among individual fish.
    • Fins: Their fins are often transparent or lightly tinted, and some individuals may display dark spots or patterns along the body.
    • Shape: Gold Severums have a deep, laterally compressed body shape typical of many cichlids.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Gold Severums are generally peaceful cichlids but can exhibit territorial behavior, especially during breeding. They may display aggression towards other cichlids or fish that invade their space.
  • Activity Level: These fish are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment. They are known for their curious nature and may interact with their owners.
  • Community Behavior: Gold Severums can coexist with various peaceful tankmates but should be housed with species that are not too small or overly aggressive.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 200 liters (53 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Gold Severums to provide ample swimming space and territories.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Gold Severums thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5-15 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate, such as sand or fine gravel, is recommended. Gold Severums appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots created by rocks, driftwood, and plants.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is best, as it encourages plant growth and mimics their natural habitat.
    • Filtration: A strong filtration system is necessary to maintain water quality, along with regular water changes (about 20% weekly).

Diet:

  • Gold Severums are omnivorous and require a varied diet to maintain their health and vibrant coloration. Their diet should include:
    • Pellets: High-quality cichlid pellets should form the staple of their diet.
    • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
    • Vegetables: Blanched vegetables like zucchini, spinach, or peas can be included for added nutrition.

Tankmates:

  • Gold Severums can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates, including:
    • Medium-sized fish: Such as Tetras, Barbs, or Rainbowfish.
    • Other cichlids: Peaceful species that are similar in size.
    • Bottom-dwellers: Species like Corydoras or Plecos that won’t compete for territory.
  • Avoid housing them with small or overly aggressive species, as this may lead to stress or injury.
