Korthausae Killifish

The Korthausae Killifish (Micropanchax korthausae) is a charming species of killifish that hails from the shallow waters and swamps of Africa. Known for its striking appearance and peaceful nature, this small fish is popular among aquarists who appreciate its beauty and unique behaviour.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Korthausae Killifish typically grow to about 4-5 cm (1.5-2 inches) in length.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: The body is slender and elongated, showcasing a mix of colours that may include yellow, blue, and green, often with a metallic sheen that shimmers under light.
    • Fins: The fins are usually transparent or lightly coloured, with subtle patterns that add to their beauty.
    • Shape: Their streamlined body shape allows for agile swimming, making them graceful swimmers in the aquarium.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Korthausae Killifish are generally peaceful and can be kept in small groups or community tanks with other non-aggressive fish.
  • Activity Level: These fish are active swimmers, often seen exploring their environment and interacting with each other.
  • Community Behaviour: They thrive in a well-planted tank where they can find hiding spots and feel secure, making them a good choice for community setups with small, peaceful fish.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Korthausae Killifish, providing enough swimming space.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: They prefer warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: A slightly acidic to neutral pH level, ideally between 6.0 and 7.5, is preferred.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 2-10 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended, along with plenty of plants and decorations to create hiding spots. Live plants, driftwood, and rocks will provide shelter and a natural environment.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is best, with floating plants helping to create shaded areas and reduce brightness.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is essential, as strong currents can stress the fish. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are important for maintaining water quality.

Diet:

Korthausae Killifish are omnivorous and require a varied diet:

  • Pellets: High-quality small pellets or flakes formulated for small tropical fish should be the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and small insects to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Occasional Treats: Freeze-dried foods can be offered occasionally but should not replace their main diet.

Breeding:

Breeding Korthausae Killifish can be rewarding:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with shallow water and plenty of plants or spawning mops is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-6.5).
  • Spawning Behaviour: The male will display his colours to attract the female. After spawning, the female will scatter her eggs among the plants.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry hatch, they can be fed with infusoria or finely crushed flakes until they are large enough to eat larger foods.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Maintaining clean water and good tank conditions is crucial to prevent diseases and ensure the health of the fish.
  • Stress Management: Providing plenty of hiding spots and maintaining good tank conditions will help reduce stress and aggression among fish.
