Platinum Ricefish

The Platinum Ricefish (Oryzias latipes) is a stunning and easy-to-keep freshwater nano fish known for its brilliant metallic white sheen. This selectively bred variant of the Japanese Ricefish makes an excellent addition to peaceful community tanks or outdoor ponds. Hardy, active, and peaceful, Platinum Ricefish are ideal for beginners and experienced aquarists alike.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Typically reaches 2.5–4 cm (1–1.5 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: Iridescent platinum-white body that reflects light beautifully. Their shimmering appearance is especially striking in planted tanks or shallow ponds.
  • Fins: Short and delicate, with some strains showing slight elongation in the caudal or dorsal fin. The fins are generally translucent.
  • Shape: Slim, torpedo-shaped body with large, expressive eyes and an upturned mouth suited for surface feeding.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Extremely peaceful and sociable. They thrive in groups and are best kept in schools of 6 or more.
  • Activity Level: Active swimmers that stay mostly in the upper levels of the tank. They are inquisitive and graceful, with a gentle swimming style.
  • Community Behaviour: Excellent community fish. They do not nip fins or bother other tankmates, making them ideal for peaceful setups.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 20 litres (5 gallons) for a small group, though larger tanks provide better stability and more space for schooling behaviour.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 18°C to 26°C (64°F to 79°F). Tolerates cooler temperatures and can be kept outdoors in mild climates.
    • pH: 6.5 to 8.0
    • Hardness: 5–20 dGH (fairly adaptable)
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: Use sand or fine gravel substrate with live or artificial plants to create a natural feel. Floating plants offer extra security and help diffuse light.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting will help showcase their platinum colouration. They shimmer beautifully under gentle, natural-looking light.
    • Filtration: A gentle sponge filter or low-flow filter is ideal. Ricefish dislike strong current. Weekly water changes of 20–30% are recommended.

Diet:

Platinum Ricefish are omnivorous and easy to feed. A varied diet promotes health, colour, and breeding activity:

  • Dry Foods: High-quality micro-pellets and crushed flakes suitable for small tropical fish.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Daphnia, baby brine shrimp, micro-worms, and mosquito larvae help provide enrichment and condition them for breeding.
  • Vegetable Matter: Occasional spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables like zucchini can be included.

Tankmates:

Due to their peaceful nature, Platinum Ricefish pair well with other gentle species:

  • Suitable Companions: Ember tetras, small rasboras, endlers, pygmy corydoras, cherry shrimp, snails, and other small, non-aggressive fish.
  • Avoid: Large or aggressive species, or fin-nippers such as tiger barbs and some danios.

Breeding:

Platinum Ricefish are egg scatterers and relatively easy to breed in captivity:

  • Breeding Setup: Use a separate breeding tank with spawning mops or dense mosses. Keep water clean and well-oxygenated.
  • Spawning Behaviour: Females carry fertilised eggs near
