Description

  • Size: Female Halfmoon Bettas typically grow to about 2.5 to 3 inches (6–8 cm).

  • Color: These Bettas are known for their vibrant colors, which include reds, blues, purples, and pinks. The "Halfmoon" name comes from their dorsal fin, which spreads into a 180-degree semicircle when they flare.

  • Behavior: Female Halfmoon Bettas are peaceful, social, and often kept in small groups called sororities. They are more relaxed than males and can live with other peaceful fish.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size

  • A minimum of 5 gallons (19 liters) is ideal for a single female Betta. 10 gallons or more is even better for more space and stability.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: Female Halfmoon Bettas thrive in warm water, ideally between 75°F and 80°F (24°C to 27°C).

  • pH: Aim for a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.5 to 7.5.

  • KH (Carbonate Hardness): A KH range of 3 to 5 dKH is ideal. This helps maintain stable pH levels and creates a comfortable environment for your Betta.

  • Hardness: Soft to moderate water hardness, generally 4–15 dGH.

  • Water Quality: Keep the water clean with 20–30% weekly water changes and a good filter to maintain water quality and oxygen levels.

Diet

  • Female Halfmoon Bettas are carnivores and should be fed:

    • High-quality Betta pellets

    • Frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms

    • Occasional freeze-dried foods as treats, but avoid overfeeding.

  • They may also eat small amounts of vegetable matter like blanched spinach or peas, though they mainly thrive on protein-rich foods.

Tank Setup

  • Substrate: Fine gravel or sand works well for the Betta.

  • Aquascaping: Include live plants, driftwood, and decorations that offer hiding spots. Bettas enjoy resting in plants and need places to retreat if they feel stressed.

  • Lighting: Moderate lighting is sufficient. They are less active during the day and prefer dimmer environments.

  • Water Movement: Bettas do best in low water flow. Avoid strong currents to reduce stress. A gentle sponge filter is ideal.

Tank Mates

  • Female Halfmoon Bettas are generally peaceful and can live with other peaceful fish like:

    • Neon Tetras

    • Corydoras Catfish

    • Shrimp or snails (ensure the shrimp are large enough to avoid being eaten)

  • Avoid keeping them with male Bettas, as they will fight. Some females may tolerate others in a sorority, but you'll need plenty of hiding spots to reduce aggression.

Breeding

  • Breeding Female Halfmoon Bettas requires careful setup. The female will lay eggs, which the male will guard until they hatch. The fry need special care and food, like infusoria or baby brine shrimp.

Summary

  • Female Halfmoon Bettas need a minimum of 5 gallons of water and prefer warm conditions (75°F to 80°F) with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5.

  • A KH of 3 to 5 dKH is ideal to maintain stable pH and water conditions.

  • They are peaceful and enjoy a diet of Betta pellets, live/frozen foods, and occasional vegetables.

  • Keep them with peaceful tank mates like Tetras and Corydoras, but avoid other male Bettas.

  • Low-flow water and regular water changes are essential for their health.
