Assorted Female Betta

The Assorted Female Betta (*Betta splendens*) is a popular freshwater aquarium fish known for its vibrant colours, peaceful nature, and unique charm. Unlike the male bettas, female bettas are generally smaller, less aggressive, and can often be housed together in groups, known as sororities. Assorted Female Bettas are typically sold as a mix of various colours and fin types, making them an exciting and diverse addition to any tank.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Female Bettas generally grow to about 5-7 cm (2-3 inches) in length, making them slightly smaller than the males.
  • Coloration: Female Bettas come in a variety of colours, including red, blue, purple, orange, and multi-coloured patterns. They are often less vibrant than the males, but still have striking and beautiful colours.
  • Fins: Female Bettas have shorter, more rounded fins compared to the longer, more elaborate fins of the males. However, they still have elegant, flowing fins that contribute to their beauty.
  • Shape: Their bodies are generally more compact and streamlined than the males, with a rounder shape, especially when ready to breed.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Female Bettas are typically peaceful and can be housed in groups when kept in a sorority. However, they can still display territorial behaviour, especially when space is limited or when there are insufficient hiding spots.
  • Activity Level: They are active swimmers, exploring their environment and interacting with other fish. They are often seen swimming near the surface of the water.
  • Community Behaviour: These fish are generally peaceful and can coexist with other non-aggressive species. Care should be taken when housing multiple females together, as they may fight if space and resources are not sufficient.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 gallons) is recommended for housing a small group of female Bettas. Larger tanks with plenty of hiding spots are ideal for maintaining a harmonious environment.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Female Bettas thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-8 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft, sandy substrate is recommended, as female Bettas enjoy exploring the bottom of the tank. Provide plenty of plants, rocks, and caves for hiding and creating a natural environment.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is sufficient for Bettas. Floating plants can help diffuse the light and provide shaded areas where the fish can feel secure.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is ideal, as strong currents can stress female Bettas. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are important for maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

Diet:

Female Bettas are carnivores and require a protein-rich diet to maintain their health and vibrant colours. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality betta-specific pellets or micro-pellets should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Occasional Treats: Freeze-dried bloodworms or tubifex worms can be offered occasionally, but they should not form the bulk of the diet as they can cause bloating if overfed.

Tankmates:

Female Bettas can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small, Peaceful Fish: Such as Neon Tetras, Rasboras, or small catfish.
  • Non-Aggressive Cichlids: Other peaceful cichlid species like the Electric Blue Acara can be compatible tankmates.
  • Bottom-Dwellers: Corydoras or other small, peaceful bottom dwellers.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species or male Bettas, as they may provoke aggression and cause stress or injury.

Breeding:

Breeding female Bettas can be relatively easy under the right conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with shallow water (about 15-20 cm or 6-8 inches) is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-6.5).
  • Spawning Behaviour: The male will court the female by flaring his fins and presenting his bubble nest. After spawning, the male will gather the eggs into the nest and guard them until they hatch.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, the male should be removed to prevent him from eating them. The fry can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Territorial Nature: Female Bettas can be territorial, particularly during breeding or when housed in overcrowded tanks. Ensure there is enough space and hiding spots to reduce aggression.
  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are essential for the health of female Bettas.
