The Walking Catfish

The Walking Catfish (*Clarias batrachus*) is a fascinating freshwater fish known for its unique ability to move across land. This species is native to Southeast Asia and is recognized for its elongated body, large pectoral fins, and ability to breathe air, allowing it to survive in low-oxygen environments.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Walking Catfish can grow quite large, typically reaching lengths of 30-40 cm (12-16 inches), but some individuals can exceed 60 cm (24 inches).
  • Coloration:
    • Body: Their body color varies from light brown to dark gray, often featuring darker spots or markings along their sides, which helps them blend into their natural habitat.
    • Fins: The pectoral fins are large and spiny, aiding in their movement across land. The dorsal fin is long and extends along the back, giving the fish a streamlined appearance.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Walking Catfish are generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially as they mature. They may exhibit aggressive behavior toward smaller fish or those that invade their territory.
  • Activity Level: These fish are primarily nocturnal, being more active at night when they hunt for food. They are also known to use their pectoral fins to "walk" across land in search of food or when moving between water bodies.
  • Community Behavior: While they can be kept in community tanks with similar sized fish, careful consideration must be given to tankmates, as their size and territorial nature may pose a threat to smaller fish.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 200 liters (53 gallons) is recommended for a single Walking Catfish, as they require ample space to swim and explore.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: They thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: Walking Catfish prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5-15 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate, such as sand or fine gravel, is recommended to protect their sensitive barbels. They enjoy hiding spots, so provide plenty of caves, rocks, and plants to create a secure environment.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is best, as bright lights may stress them. Floating plants can help diffuse light and provide shaded areas.
    • Filtration: A strong filtration system is essential, as Walking Catfish can produce a significant amount of waste. Regular water changes (about 25% weekly) are also necessary to maintain water quality.

Diet:

  • Walking Catfish are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive. Their diet should include:
    • Pellets: High-quality sinking pellets formulated for catfish or bottom feeders should form the staple of their diet.
    • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
    • Vegetable Matter: Incorporate blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach to ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

  • Walking Catfish can be housed with a variety of tankmates, but care should be taken to select peaceful species that won’t provoke them. Suitable tankmates include:
    • Larger peaceful fish: Such as Silver Dollars, TinFoil Barbs.
    • Other catfish species: As long as they are not overly territorial or aggressive.
    • Bottom-dwellers: Such as Large Loaches that can coexist without competing for space.
