Three Spot Rasbora
The Three Spot Rasbora (Boraras maculatus) is a small, peaceful freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia. Known for its bright colouring and active shoaling behaviour, it is an excellent choice for nano aquariums and planted community tanks.
Physical Characteristics:
Size: Typically grows to around 1–2 cm, with a maximum size of approximately 2.5 cm.
Coloration: Displays a reddish-orange body with distinctive dark markings along the sides.
Fins: Small, delicate fins, often with subtle red tones.
Shape: Slender and compact body shape, typical of small rasbora species.
Behavior:
Temperament: Very peaceful and suitable for calm community aquariums.
Activity Level: Active shoaling fish that should be kept in groups for confidence and natural behaviour.
Community Behavior: Best kept in groups of 8 or more with other small, peaceful tankmates.
Aquarium Care:
Tank Size: A minimum of 20 litres is suitable for a small group, though larger planted tanks are preferred.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22°C to 26°C
pH: 6.0 to 7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water is suitable.
Tank Setup:
Substrate and Decorations: A planted aquarium with driftwood, leaf litter, and plenty of hiding areas is ideal.
Lighting: Moderate to subdued lighting helps them feel secure and enhances their colours.
Filtration: Gentle filtration is recommended, as strong currents may stress these small fish.
Diet:
Dwarf Rasboras are omnivores and should be fed a varied diet.
Pellets: Offer high-quality micro pellets or finely crushed tropical flakes.
Live or Frozen Foods: Feed small foods such as daphnia, baby brine shrimp, cyclops, and micro worms.
Vegetable Matter: Small amounts of plant-based food may be included as part of a balanced diet.
Tankmates:
Dwarf Rasboras are best kept with other peaceful species such as small tetras, peaceful rasboras, Corydoras, Otocinclus, and small shrimp. Avoid large, aggressive, or predatory fish.
Breeding:
Breeding Setup: A separate tank with soft, slightly acidic water and fine-leaved plants or spawning mops is recommended.
Spawning Behaviour: Adults scatter eggs among plants and do not provide parental care.
Fry Care: Fry should be fed infusoria at first, followed by newly hatched brine shrimp once large enough.
Special Considerations:
Water Quality: Stable, clean water is essential due to their small size.
Shoaling Requirement: They should be kept in groups of at least 8 to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour.
Mature Aquarium: Best added to an established aquarium with stable water conditions.
