Overview:
Ceratopteris thalictroides, commonly known as Water Sprite, is a fast-growing and versatile aquarium fern, valued for its finely divided, lace-like leaves and bright green colour. Its soft foliage adds texture and movement to planted aquariums.
This species can be grown either rooted in substrate or floating at the surface. When floated, it provides excellent shade, surface cover, and shelter for fish fry and shrimp.
Care and Growth:
Ceratopteris thalictroides thrives in low to medium lighting and does not require CO₂ injection, making it ideal for low-tech aquariums. Regular fertilisation supports its rapid growth and lush appearance.
Growth is fast under stable conditions. Older leaves can be trimmed as needed, and new plantlets often form on mature leaves, allowing for easy propagation.
