Overview:
Helanthium tenellum ‘Red’, previously known as Echinodorus tenellus, is a popular carpeting plant valued for its narrow leaves that develop attractive reddish to bronze tones under good lighting. Supplied in an in-vitro cup, this plant is grown in sterile laboratory conditions, ensuring it is free from pests, algae, and snails.
When planted in groups, ‘Red’ forms a natural, grass-like carpet that adds subtle colour contrast to foreground layouts. Its compact height makes it suitable for both larger aquascapes and smaller nano tanks.
Care and Growth:
This plant prefers medium to high lighting and benefits greatly from CO₂ injection, which encourages faster spreading and more intense red coloration. A nutrient-rich substrate is recommended, as Helanthium tenellum feeds primarily through its roots. Regular fertilisation supports healthy growth and colour development.
Once established, the plant spreads via runners, gradually forming a dense carpet across the substrate. Occasional trimming helps maintain a tidy appearance and promotes new growth.
