The Redtailed Catfish
The Redtailed Catfish (*Phractocephalus hemioliopterus*) is a large and striking freshwater fish native to the Amazon River basin and surrounding waters. Known for its impressive size and vibrant coloration, this catfish is a popular choice for large aquariums, but it requires careful consideration due to its adult size and specific care needs.
Physical Characteristics:
- Size: Redtailed Catfish can grow to impressive lengths, typically reaching 60-90 cm (24-35 inches) in captivity, and potentially up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) in the wild.
- Coloration:
- Body: The body is generally a dark grey or black, providing a striking contrast to its bright red or orange tail.
- Fins: The caudal fin is large and vividly colored, often displaying a striking red or orange hue, which gives the fish its common name.
- Shape: Redtailed Catfish have a robust and elongated body, with a flattened head and prominent barbels, which help them navigate and forage in murky waters.
Behavior:
- Temperament: Redtailed Catfish are generally peaceful but can become territorial as they mature. They are best kept with larger fish that can coexist peacefully.
- Activity Level: They are active swimmers, especially in larger tanks, and often explore their environment. These fish are known for their inquisitive nature.
- Community Behavior: While they can be housed in community tanks, it is essential to select tankmates carefully to avoid aggression and ensure compatibility.
Aquarium Care:
- Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 500 liters (132 gallons) is recommended for a single Redtailed Catfish, as they require ample swimming space and room to grow.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: Redtailed Catfish thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
- pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5-15 dGH, is ideal.
- Tank Setup:
- Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended to protect their sensitive barbels. Provide plenty of hiding spots using rocks, driftwood, and plants to mimic their natural habitat.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable, but they appreciate shaded areas created by decorations and plants.
- Filtration: A strong filtration system is essential, as Redtailed Catfish produce a significant amount of waste. Regular water changes (about 25% weekly) are necessary to maintain water quality.
Diet:
- Redtailed Catfish are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive. Their diet should include:
- Pellets: High-quality sinking pellets designed for carnivorous fish should form the staple of their diet.
- Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and fish fillets to provide essential protein and variety.
- Vegetable Matter: Include plant-based foods such as spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables to ensure a balanced diet.
Tankmates:
- Redtailed Catfish can be housed with a variety of larger, peaceful tankmates that share similar water parameters. Suitable tankmates include:
- Large cichlids: Such as Oscars or Severums.
- Other catfish: Larger species of catfish that won't compete for the same niche.
