Cichla orinocoensis Care Guide

Description

Cichla orinocoensis, a species of peacock bass, is a large, predatory freshwater fish native to the Orinoco River basin in South America.

Known for its golden-yellow body, dark lateral spots, and striking red eyes, it can grow up to 60 cm and live for 10-15 years in optimal conditions.

Habitat Setup

A 600-liter (150-gallon) tank or larger is required for juveniles, with 1,000+ liters (250+ gallons) needed for adults.

Provide a sandy substrate, driftwood, rocks, and open swimming space.

They prefer warm water between 26-30°C, a pH of 6.0-7.5, and strong filtration with high oxygenation.

A secure lid is necessary, as they are powerful jumpers.

Diet & Feeding

Cichla orinocoensis is a carnivorous predator, requiring a diet of live or frozen fish, shrimp, and high-protein pellets.

Training them to accept frozen foods helps prevent dependency on live prey. Feed juveniles daily and adults several times per week.

Behavior & Tank Mates

Highly territorial and aggressive, they are best kept with other large, robust fish like arowanas, large catfish, or other peacock bass.

Avoid small tank mates, as they will be seen as food. They do best in species-only setups or carefully selected predator tanks.

Health & Maintenance

Strong filtration and frequent water changes are essential to maintain water quality.

Watch for parasites, infections, and stress-related illnesses.

Ensure they have ample space to prevent aggression and stunted growth.

Final Tips

Cichla orinocoensis is a stunning but high-maintenance species best suited for experienced aquarists with large tanks.

Proper space, a varied diet, and excellent water quality are key to their health and growth. ????????
