Neon Tetra
The Neon Tetra (*Paracheirodon innesi*) is a small, brightly coloured freshwater fish that is popular among aquarists for its striking appearance and peaceful nature. This species is particularly appreciated for its vibrant blue and red coloration, making it a stunning addition to community tanks.
Physical Characteristics:
- Size: Neon Tetras typically grow to about 3-5 cm (1.2-2 inches) in length.
- Coloration: They are characterised by their iridescent blue body, which contrasts beautifully with a bright red stripe running from the middle of the body to the base of the tail.
- Fins: Their fins are relatively small and transparent, which adds to their delicate appearance.
- Shape: The body is slender and laterally compressed, a common trait among small schooling fish.
Behaviour:
- Temperament: Neon Tetras are generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of tankmates. They are social fish and should be kept in groups to feel secure.
- Activity Level: They are moderately active swimmers, often seen darting about the tank in schools, displaying their vibrant colours.
- Community Behaviour: These fish thrive in community tanks, but care should be taken to select peaceful tankmates that won't stress them or nip at their fins.
Aquarium Care:
- Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Neon Tetras, with larger tanks providing better stability and environment.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: Neon Tetras thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F).
- pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 1-10 dGH, is ideal.
- Tank Setup:
- Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended. Neon Tetras appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots, as live plants like Java moss and floating plants provide cover and mimic their natural habitat.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal for showcasing their colours. Floating plants can help diffuse the light and create shaded areas.
- Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as strong currents can stress these small fish. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential for maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
Diet:
Neon Tetras are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive. Their diet should include:
- Flakes: High-quality flake food formulated for tropical fish should form the staple of their diet.
- Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
- Vegetable Matter: Including finely chopped vegetables, such as spinach or zucchini, can help ensure a balanced diet.
Tankmates:
Neon Tetras can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates, including:
- Small Tetras: Such as Rummy Nose Tetras or Cardinal Tetras.
- Peaceful Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras.
- Bottom-Dwellers: Corydoras catfish or other peaceful bottom-dwellers.
Avoid housing them with aggressive species or fin-nippers, as this can lead to stress or injury.
Breeding:
Breeding Neon Tetras can be rewarding and relatively straightforward under the right conditions:
- Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with shallow water (about 10-15 cm or 4-6 inches) is ideal. The water should be cool (around 22°C to 24°C or 72°F to 75°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-6.5).
