Overview:

Microsorum pteropus, commonly known as Java Fern, is one of the most popular and hardy aquarium plants available. Its elongated, leathery green leaves and adaptable nature make it suitable for a wide range of aquarium setups.

Java Fern is best attached to rocks or driftwood rather than planted in substrate, as burying the rhizome can cause it to rot. It thrives in shaded areas and is an excellent choice for low-tech and beginner aquariums.

Care and Growth:

This plant prefers low to medium lighting and does not require CO₂ injection, though supplementation can support healthier growth. Strong lighting should be avoided where possible, as it may encourage algae growth on the leaves.

Growth is steady and low maintenance. Java Fern reproduces by producing small plantlets on the tips or undersides of its leaves, which can be gently removed and attached elsewhere in the aquarium.

  • Extremely hardy and beginner-friendly
  • Thrives in low-light conditions
  • Does not require CO₂
