Yellow Shrimp

The Yellow Shrimp (*Neocaridina heteropoda*) is a popular freshwater shrimp known for its vibrant yellow coloration and hardy nature. This species is particularly appreciated in the aquarium hobby for its striking appearance and ease of care, making it an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Yellow Shrimp typically grow to about 3-5 cm (1.2-2 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: They are characterised by their bright yellow bodies, which can vary in intensity from pale yellow to a deeper, more vibrant hue. The colour can sometimes be affected by environmental factors and diet.
  • Shape: Their bodies are elongated and slightly flattened, which is typical of shrimp species.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Yellow Shrimp are generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of tankmates. They are social creatures and often interact with their environment and each other.
  • Activity Level: These shrimp are active scavengers, frequently foraging for food and exploring their surroundings.
  • Community Behaviour: They can be housed in community tanks, but care should be taken to select peaceful tankmates that won’t threaten or outcompete them.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 20 litres (5 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Yellow Shrimp, although larger tanks are preferable for stability and comfort.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Yellow Shrimp thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 4-10 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended. Yellow Shrimp appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots, as live plants and decorations provide cover and mimic their natural habitat.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is best for promoting plant growth while not stressing the shrimp.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is ideal, as strong currents can stress shrimp. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential for maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

Diet:

Yellow Shrimp are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive:

  • Shrimp Food: High-quality sinking pellets or granules designed specifically for shrimp should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: Including blanched vegetables, such as spinach or zucchini, can help ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

Yellow Shrimp can be housed with various peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Ember Tetras.
  • Peaceful Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras.
  • Other Shrimp: Other peaceful shrimp species, such as Amano Shrimp.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species or larger fish that may see them as prey.

Breeding:

Breeding Yellow Shrimp can be rewarding and relatively straightforward under the right conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with stable water parameters is ideal. The water should be warm (around 22°C to 26°C or 72°F to 79°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.5-7.5).
  • Spawning Behaviour: Female Yellow Shrimp carry eggs until they hatch, typically requiring good water quality and appropriate conditions for the larvae to thrive.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed infusoria or finely crushed food suitable for shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of Yellow Shrimp.
  • Shy Nature: These shrimp can be shy, particularly in brightly lit tanks. Providing plenty of hiding spots can help them feel more secure.
