Albino Emperor Tetra

The Albino Emperor Tetra (*Nematobrycon palmeri*) is a stunning and peaceful freshwater fish known for its unique albino colouration and active swimming nature. This species is a variant of the popular Emperor Tetra and is highly appreciated by aquarists for its gentle temperament and striking appearance, making it an excellent addition to community tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Albino Emperor Tetras typically grow to about 5-6 cm (2-2.4 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: They are characterised by their translucent white to pale pink bodies, which are complemented by reddish-pink fins, creating a vibrant yet subtle appearance. The albino variant lacks the typical black markings of the standard Emperor Tetra, giving them a lighter, more ethereal look.
  • Fins: Their fins are relatively long and pointed, with the tail fin being particularly elongated and gracefully swept back, contributing to their elegance.
  • Shape: Their bodies are slender and streamlined, allowing them to swim gracefully and swiftly through the water.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Albino Emperor Tetras are peaceful and social fish that thrive in groups. They are non-aggressive and do well in community tanks with other peaceful species.
  • Activity Level: These fish are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment. They can often be seen schooling together in open water or hiding among plants when they feel stressed.
  • Community Behavior: Albino Emperor Tetras are ideal for community tanks, as they coexist peacefully with other non-aggressive species. They should be kept in schools of at least 5-6 individuals to encourage natural behaviour and reduce stress.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 liters (10 gallons) is recommended for a small school of Albino Emperor Tetras. A larger tank is ideal for better water quality and more space for swimming.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Albino Emperor Tetras thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 22°C to 28°C (72°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 4-12 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is ideal. Albino Emperor Tetras enjoy a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots, such as live plants like Java Fern, Anubias, and Amazon Sword, as well as driftwood and rocks to mimic their natural environment.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is recommended to bring out their pale colours. Floating plants can help create shaded areas, offering hiding spots and reducing stress.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is preferred, as strong currents can stress the fish. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are important for maintaining clean water.

Diet:

Albino Emperor Tetras are omnivores and require a balanced diet to maintain their health and vibrant colours. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality tropical fish pellets or flakes should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: Including blanched vegetables such as spinach or zucchini helps ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

Albino Emperor Tetras are peaceful and can be housed with a variety of non-aggressive tankmates, including:

  • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras, Rummy Nose Tetras, or Cardinal Tetras.
  • Small Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras or Celestial Pearl Danios.
  • Bottom-Dwellers: Peaceful catfish like Corydoras or Otocinclus can also be good companions.

Breeding:

Breeding Albino Emperor Tetras in a home aquarium is possible, though it requires a well-maintained environment:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with a gentle filter and shallow water (about 10-15 cm or 4-6 inches) is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-6.5).
  • Spawning Behavior: The male will court the female and guide her to a plant where she will lay her eggs. The male will fertilise the eggs shortly after they are laid.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, remove the parents to prevent them from eating the fry. The fry can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of Albino Emperor Tetras.
  • Shy Nature: These fish may be shy, particularly in brightly lit tanks. Providing plenty of hiding spots and soft, diffused light can help them feel more secure.
