Pink Spaghetti Eel

The Pink Spaghetti Eel (*Moringua raitaborua*) is a fascinating and unique species of eel found in various marine environments. Known for its long, slender, and vibrant pink body, this eel is particularly prized by aquarium enthusiasts who are looking for something different to add to their tanks. The Pink Spaghetti Eel is not only visually striking but also has interesting behaviors that make it a popular choice among fish keepers.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Pink Spaghetti Eels can grow up to 50-70 cm (20-28 inches) in length, making them a notable presence in larger aquariums.
  • Coloration: These eels are characterised by their vibrant pink coloration, which gives them their common name. Their bodies are long, thin, and slightly translucent, allowing their bright pink hues to stand out.
  • Fins: They have small, relatively inconspicuous fins that are located towards the back of their bodies. The lack of large fins contributes to their snake-like movement.
  • Shape: The body of the Pink Spaghetti Eel is long, slender, and worm-like, contributing to its "spaghetti" appearance. Their shape allows them to burrow and move through the substrate with ease.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Pink Spaghetti Eels are generally peaceful and not aggressive. They spend a lot of time burrowed in the substrate, where they feel secure, only emerging occasionally to forage or swim around.
  • Activity Level: These eels are somewhat sedentary but become more active at night when they forage for food. They are not fast swimmers, but their long, snake-like bodies help them navigate through the substrate.
  • Community Behavior: They are generally non-aggressive toward tankmates and can coexist with other peaceful species. However, due to their burrowing nature, they may disturb substrate-dwelling species occasionally.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 100 liters (26 gallons) is recommended for a single Pink Spaghetti Eel. Larger tanks are preferable to allow for their long, burrowing habits.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Pink Spaghetti Eels prefer warmer water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They thrive in slightly alkaline to neutral water, with a pH range of 7.5 to 8.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water is ideal, with a general hardness (GH) of 8-12 dGH.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A fine-gravel or soft-sand substrate is recommended, as they love to burrow. Adding rocks, caves, or driftwood can provide hiding places and create a more natural habitat.
    • Lighting: Low to moderate lighting is ideal, as these eels tend to be more active in subdued lighting.
    • Filtration: A strong filtration system is necessary to maintain clean water, but the current should not be too strong, as they prefer calm waters. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are important to maintain good water quality.

Diet:

Pink Spaghetti Eels are carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet to thrive. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality sinking pellets formulated for carnivorous fish can form the basis of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, or small fish like guppies. They enjoy foraging for food, so it’s ideal to scatter the food around the substrate.
  • Occasional Treats: Earthworms or small crustaceans can be offered as occasional treats to provide variety in their diet.

Tankmates:

Pink Spaghetti Eels are peaceful and can be housed with other non-aggressive fish. Suitable tankmates include:

  • Small to medium fish: Such as Tetras, Rasboras, and other peaceful community species.
  • Bottom-dwelling fish: Corydoras catfish or other peaceful bottom-dwellers.
  • Peaceful invertebrates: Such as Amano shrimp or snails.

Avoid housing them with large or aggressive species, as they may stress the eel or cause harm.

Breeding:

Breeding Pink Spaghetti Eels in captivity is challenging, as they require specific conditions. If successful, the fry are quite small and will need fine food such as infusoria or micro-worms for the first few weeks.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring of water quality is essential to ensure a healthy environment for the eel. Good filtration and consistent water changes are crucial.
  • Burrowing Nature: Since these eels like to burrow, it’s important to provide a suitable substrate that allows them to do so safely. Avoid sharp-edged rocks that could damage their delicate skin.
