Borneo Python Eel (Moringua edwardsi)

The Borneo Python Eel is a fascinating species of eel known for its unique appearance and behaviour. Native to the coastal waters of Southeast Asia, particularly around Borneo, this eel is a popular choice for aquarists looking for an exotic addition to their marine tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Borneo Python Eels typically grow to about 60-90 cm (24-35 inches) in length.
  • Colouration: They have a distinctive pattern featuring a light beige or yellowish body with dark brown or black spots. This coloration helps them blend into their natural habitat of sandy or muddy bottoms.
  • Shape: Borneo Python Eels have elongated, snake-like bodies, allowing them to navigate through narrow crevices and burrows.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Borneo Python Eels are generally peaceful but can be territorial. They are known to be shy and will often hide in substrates or crevices when feeling threatened.
  • Activity Level: These eels are primarily nocturnal, being most active during the night when they hunt for food.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (40 gallons) is recommended for a single Borneo Python Eel, as they require plenty of space to swim and explore.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: They thrive in warm water, ideally between 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: A slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.5 to 7.5 is preferred.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water is ideal.
  • Tank Setup: Provide a sandy substrate with plenty of hiding places using rocks, driftwood, and PVC pipes. This setup mimics their natural habitat and helps reduce stress.

Diet:

Borneo Python Eels are carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet. Their diet should include:

  • High-quality marine pellets or sinking pellets.
  • Live or frozen foods such as shrimp, fish, and worms.

Tankmates:

These eels can be housed with other peaceful species, but caution should be taken with smaller fish that may be viewed as prey. Suitable tankmates include:

  • Other larger peaceful fish.
  • Bottom-dwelling species such as certain catfish.

Breeding:

Breeding Borneo Python Eels in captivity is rare and not well documented. They are typically hermaphroditic, meaning they have both male and female reproductive organs, but specific breeding conditions are not well understood.

Conservation Status:

The Borneo Python Eel's natural habitat is threatened by environmental changes and habitat loss. Responsible aquarium keeping and conservation efforts are essential to protect this unique species in the wild.

In summary, the Borneo Python Eel is a captivating and intriguing species that can make a unique addition to a marine aquarium. With proper care and attention to their needs, they can thrive and provide interest for aquarists.
