Bamboo Shrimp

The Bamboo Shrimp (*Atyopsis moluccensis*) is a fascinating freshwater shrimp known for its unique appearance and filter-feeding behaviour. Often sought after by aquarists, this shrimp adds both beauty and functionality to a tank, helping to maintain water quality by consuming small particles suspended in the water.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Bamboo Shrimp typically grow to about 8-10 cm (3-4 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: They are generally a light brown to greenish colour, often featuring stripes or patterns that help them blend into their surroundings.
  • Body Shape: The body is elongated and laterally compressed, with long antennae that aid in sensing their environment.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Bamboo Shrimp are generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of tankmates. They are not aggressive and typically do not pose a threat to other peaceful species.
  • Activity Level: These shrimp are moderately active and are often seen perched on decorations or substrate, using their fan-like pincers to filter feed.
  • Community Behaviour: Bamboo Shrimp thrive in community tanks, helping to maintain water quality by consuming detritus and algae.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 75 litres (20 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Bamboo Shrimp, as they prefer space to forage and explore.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Bamboo Shrimp thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 4-10 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is ideal. Bamboo Shrimp appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots, as live plants and driftwood provide cover and mimic their natural habitat.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is best for showcasing their colours and promoting plant growth.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as strong currents can stress shrimp. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential for maintaining water quality.

Diet:

Bamboo Shrimp are filter feeders and require a varied diet to thrive:

  • Detritus: They naturally feed on small particles in the water, such as detritus and algae, so maintaining a tank with a good supply of these will help.
  • Supplementary Foods: Offer high-quality sinking pellets designed for shrimp, as well as powdered foods specifically formulated for filter feeders.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Occasionally provide live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp or daphnia for additional protein.

Tankmates:

Bamboo Shrimp can be housed with various peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Ember Tetras.
  • Peaceful Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras.
  • Other Shrimp: Other peaceful shrimp species, like Amano Shrimp.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species or larger fish that may see them as prey.

Breeding:

Breeding Bamboo Shrimp in captivity can be challenging due to their specific requirements:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with stable water parameters is ideal. The water should be warm (around 24°C to 28°C or 75°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.5-7.5).
  • Spawning Behaviour: Female Bamboo Shrimp carry eggs until they hatch, typically requiring brackish water conditions for the larvae to develop.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry hatch, they need to be moved to a suitable environment with brackish water for growth.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of Bamboo Shrimp.
  • Feeding Behaviour: Providing plenty of food particles in the water column is essential for their filter-feeding habits.
