Hillstream Loach

The Hillstream Loach (*Beaufortia kweichowensis*) is a fascinating freshwater fish renowned for its unique appearance and specialised habitat. This species is particularly appreciated in the aquarium hobby for its ability to thrive in fast-flowing waters, making it an attractive addition to river-themed tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Hillstream Loaches typically grow to about 5-7 cm (2-3 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: They are characterised by their flattened bodies and striking patterns, which can include shades of brown, green, and grey, often with darker mottling that helps them blend into rocky environments.
  • Fins: Their fins are relatively small but well-adapted for gripping onto surfaces in fast currents, with a particularly large dorsal fin that aids in stability.
  • Shape: The body is flattened and streamlined, which allows them to navigate through swift waters efficiently.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Hillstream Loaches are generally peaceful and can coexist with various tankmates. They are more social than some other loach species and can often be seen interacting with their environment.
  • Activity Level: They are active swimmers, enjoying their time spent on the substrate or clinging to decorations and plants.
  • Community Behaviour: These fish can be housed in community tanks, but care should be taken to select peaceful tankmates that can thrive in similar conditions.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 114 litres (30 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Hillstream Loaches, as they prefer larger spaces with plenty of flow.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Hillstream Loaches thrive in cooler waters, with an ideal temperature range of 18°C to 24°C (64°F to 75°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5-15 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A sandy or fine gravel substrate is recommended. Hillstream Loaches appreciate a well-decorated tank with rocks, driftwood, and plenty of plants, as these provide hiding spots and mimic their natural habitat.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal for showcasing their colours. Floating plants can help diffuse the light and create shaded areas.
    • Filtration: A strong filtration system is essential to maintain water movement and quality, simulating the fast-flowing rivers they come from. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are also important.

Diet:

Hillstream Loaches are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality sinking pellets designed for bottom feeders should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: Including blanched vegetables, such as spinach or zucchini, can help ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

Hillstream Loaches can be housed with various peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Rummy Nose Tetras.
  • Peaceful Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras.
  • Bottom-Dwellers: Corydoras catfish or other peaceful bottom-dwellers.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species or fin-nippers, as this can lead to stress or injury.

Breeding:

Breeding Hillstream Loaches in captivity can be challenging, but it is possible under the right conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with shallow water (about 10-15 cm or 4-6 inches) is ideal. The water should be cool (around 22°C to 24°C or 72°F to 75°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.5-7.0).
  • Spawning Behaviour: The male will court the female and guide her to the spawning site, where eggs are laid on smooth surfaces or plants.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of Hillstream Loaches.
  • Social Nature: These fish thrive in groups, so it is best to keep them in pairs or small groups to reduce stress and promote natural behaviour.
