Rainbow Gourami

The Rainbow Gourami (*Trichopodus leerii*) is a stunning and colourful freshwater fish that is popular among aquarists for its peaceful nature and vibrant hues. This species is well-known for its iridescent body and elegant swimming style, making it a captivating addition to any community tank.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Rainbow Gouramis typically grow to about 10-12 cm (4-5 inches) in length.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: The body displays a beautiful array of colours, ranging from shades of blue and green to pink and orange. The colours can appear more vivid under proper lighting conditions.
    • Fins: Their fins are often translucent with hints of colour that complement the body, enhancing their overall elegance.
  • Shape: Rainbow Gouramis have a deep, laterally compressed body, giving them a graceful appearance while swimming.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: Rainbow Gouramis are generally peaceful and can coexist well with a variety of tankmates. They may display some territorial behaviour, especially during breeding, but they are not aggressive.
  • Activity Level: They are moderate swimmers and enjoy exploring their surroundings, often spending time in the middle and upper levels of the tank.
  • Community Behaviour: Rainbow Gouramis thrive in community tanks and can be housed with other non-aggressive species, but it is essential to avoid housing them with overly aggressive fish.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 60 litres (15 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Rainbow Gouramis, as they prefer ample swimming space.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Rainbow Gouramis thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-8 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended, along with plenty of hiding spots created with live plants, driftwood, and rocks. Floating plants can also provide shade and mimic their natural habitat.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is preferred, as they are native to dimly lit environments. Floating plants or leaves can help create natural, shaded areas.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as strong currents can stress the fish. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential to maintain water quality.

Diet:

Rainbow Gouramis are omnivorous and require a varied diet to maintain their health and vibrant colours. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality small pellets designed for tropical fish should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: They also benefit from the addition of blanched vegetables, such as zucchini or spinach, to their diet.

Feed them 2-3 times daily, providing only as much food as they can consume in a few minutes to avoid overfeeding and maintain water quality.

Tankmates:

Rainbow Gouramis can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small, peaceful fish: Such as Tetras, Rasboras, or other small community fish.
  • Bottom-dwellers: Corydoras catfish or similar species that occupy the lower regions of the tank.
  • Shrimp: Peaceful invertebrates like Amano shrimp or Cherry shrimp can coexist well with Rainbow Gouramis.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species or larger fish that may bully them, as this can lead to stress or injury.
