Lyretail Guppy
The Lyretail Guppy (*Poecilia reticulata*) is a popular freshwater fish known for its vibrant colours and unique tail shape. The Lyretail variety features elongated, forked tails that resemble the shape of a lyre, making them a striking addition to any aquarium. These lively fish are ideal for community tanks and are appreciated by aquarists for their beauty and engaging behaviour.
Physical Characteristics:
- Size: Lyretail Guppies typically grow to about 3-4 cm (1.2-1.6 inches) in length, with males being smaller than females.
- Coloration:
- Body: They come in a wide range of colours, including red, blue, green, and yellow, often displaying intricate patterns and markings.
- Fins: The Lyretail is distinguished by its long, flowing tail fins, which are forked and spread out, giving them a graceful appearance.
- Shape: They have a small, compact body with a rounded belly, especially in females.
Behaviour:
- Temperament: Lyretail Guppies are generally peaceful and social fish, making them suitable for community tanks. They can sometimes exhibit mild territorial behaviour, especially males competing for female attention.
- Activity Level: They are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment, often seen darting around the tank.
- Community Behaviour: Lyretail Guppies thrive in groups and do well with other non-aggressive species, making them ideal for community aquariums.
Aquarium Care:
- Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Lyretail Guppies.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: They prefer warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
- pH: A slightly alkaline pH range of 7.0 to 8.0 is best.
- Hardness: They thrive in soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 10-30 dGH.
- Tank Setup:
- Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended. Live plants, such as Java fern and Hornwort, provide hiding spots and help create a natural environment. Decorations like rocks and driftwood can also enhance the tank.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable for showcasing their colours and promoting plant growth.
- Filtration: A gentle filtration system is ideal to maintain water quality. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are crucial for their health.
Diet:
Lyretail Guppies are omnivorous and require a varied diet:
- Flakes: High-quality flake food should form the staple of their diet.
- Pellets: Small sinking pellets specifically designed for omnivorous fish can be offered.
- Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
- Vegetable Matter: Occasional feedings of blanched vegetables, such as spinach or zucchini, are beneficial.
Breeding:
Breeding Lyretail Guppies is relatively straightforward:
- Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with plenty of plants for cover is ideal. The water should be warm (around 24°C to 26°C or 75°F to 79°F) and slightly alkaline (pH 7.0-8.0).
- Spawning Behaviour: The female will carry fertilised eggs internally until they hatch, typically after a gestation period of about 4-6 weeks.
- Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed infusoria or finely crushed flake food.
Special Considerations:
- Social Fish: Lyretail Guppies thrive in groups, so it’s best to keep them in schools of at least three or more.
- Water Quality: Maintaining good water quality is crucial for their health, so regular testing and changes are important.
