Pearl Gourami
The Pearl Gourami (*Trichopodus leerii*) is a stunning freshwater fish known for its unique appearance and peaceful nature. Native to the shallow waters of Southeast Asia, particularly in regions like Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, the Pearl Gourami is a popular choice among aquarists for community tanks due to its gentle temperament and attractive colours.
Physical Characteristics:
- Size: Pearl Gouramis typically grow to about 7.5-10 cm (3-4 inches) in length.
- Coloration:
- Body: The body features a distinctive pattern of small, iridescent spots or pearls that cover a light grey or silver background, giving the fish its name. This shimmering appearance makes them a visually striking addition to any aquarium.
- Fins: The fins are relatively long and flowing, adding to their graceful appearance. The colour of the fins can vary, often with hints of blue or green, complementing the body.
- Shape: Pearl Gouramis have a deep, laterally compressed body, which contributes to their elegant swimming style.
Behaviour:
- Temperament: Pearl Gouramis are generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of non-aggressive tankmates. They may display some territorial behaviour, particularly during breeding, but are typically not aggressive.
- Activity Level: These fish are moderate swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment. They often spend time in the middle and upper levels of the tank.
- Community Behaviour: Pearl Gouramis thrive in community tanks and can be kept with other peaceful species, but care should be taken to avoid housing them with overly aggressive fish.
Aquarium Care:
- Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 60 litres (15 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Pearl Gouramis, as they prefer ample swimming space.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: Pearl Gouramis thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
- pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-8 dGH, is ideal.
- Tank Setup:
- Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is recommended, along with plenty of hiding spots created with live plants, driftwood, and rocks. Floating plants can also provide shade and mimic their natural habitat.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is preferred, as they are native to dimly lit environments. Floating plants or leaves can help create natural, shaded areas.
- Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as strong currents can stress the fish. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential to maintain water quality.
Diet:
Pearl Gouramis are omnivorous and require a varied diet to maintain their health and vibrant colours. Their diet should include:
- Pellets: High-quality small pellets designed for tropical fish should form the staple of their diet.
- Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to provide essential protein and variety.
- Vegetable Matter: They also benefit from the addition of blanched vegetables, such as zucchini or spinach, to their diet.
Feed them 2-3 times daily, providing only as much food as they can consume in a few minutes to avoid overfeeding and maintain water quality.
Tankmates:
Pearl Gouramis can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates, including:
- Small, peaceful fish: Such as Tetras, Rasboras, or other small community fish.
- Bottom-dwellers: Corydoras catfish or similar species that occupy the lower regions of the tank.
- Shrimp: Peaceful invertebrates like Amano shrimp or Cherry shrimp can coexist well with Pearl Gouramis.
Avoid housing them with aggressive species or larger fish that may bully them, as this can lead to stress or injury.
