Boesemani Rainbowfish

The Boesemani Rainbowfish (*Melanotaenia boesemani*) is a striking freshwater species native to the rivers of New Guinea. This species is well-known in the aquarium hobby for its vibrant colours and peaceful nature, making it an attractive addition to community tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Boesemani Rainbowfish typically grow to about 8-10 cm (3-4 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: Males are characterised by their vivid blue bodies that transition into a bright yellow or orange colour on the lower half. Females are generally less colourful, exhibiting more muted tones.
  • Fins: The fins of the Boesemani Rainbowfish are long and flowing, particularly the dorsal fin, which enhances their graceful swimming style.
  • Shape: Their body is elongated and streamlined, typical of many rainbowfish species.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Boesemani Rainbowfish are generally peaceful and sociable. They thrive in groups and can coexist with a variety of tankmates.
  • Activity Level: These fish are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment, often seen darting about in the tank.
  • Community Behavior: Boesemani Rainbowfish are best kept in schools of at least six individuals to promote natural behaviour and social interaction.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 80 litres (20 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Boesemani Rainbowfish, though larger tanks are preferable for stable water conditions.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F)
    • pH: 6.5 to 7.5
    • Hardness: 5 to 15 dGH
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft, sandy substrate is ideal. Boesemani Rainbowfish appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots, using live plants such as Java fern, Anubias, and floating plants to provide cover.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable for showcasing their vibrant colours, with floating plants helping to create shaded areas.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as strong currents can stress these fish. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are important for maintaining a clean environment.

Diet:

Boesemani Rainbowfish are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality tropical fish pellets should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: Including blanched vegetables, such as spinach or zucchini, can help ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

Boesemani Rainbowfish can be housed with various peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Rummy Nose Tetras.
  • Peaceful Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras.
  • Bottom-Dwellers: Corydoras catfish or other peaceful bottom-dwellers.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species or fin-nippers, as this can lead to stress or injury.

Breeding:

Breeding Boesemani Rainbowfish can be rewarding and relatively straightforward under the right conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with shallow water (about 10-15 cm or 4-6 inches) is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-6.5).
  • Spawning Behavior: The male will court the female and guide her to the spawning site. After spawning, the parents should be removed to prevent them from eating the eggs.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of Boesemani Rainbowfish.
  • Jumping Behavior: These fish are known to be skittish and may jump out of the aquarium. Providing a secure lid or cover is recommended to prevent this behaviour.
