The Red Mascot Super Delta Betta

The Red Mascot Super Delta Betta is a stunning variety of Betta splendens known for its bright red coloration and distinctive Super Delta tail, which is an intermediate fin type between the traditional Delta and Halfmoon. Male Red Mascot Super Delta Bettas are prized for their vivid red bodies and impressive fin spread, which can reach up to 180 degrees. This makes them a beautiful and eye-catching addition to any aquarium.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Male Red Mascot Super Delta Bettas typically grow to about 6-7 cm (2.4-2.8 inches), similar to other Betta splendens.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: The Red Mascot Super Delta Betta is known for its deep, rich red coloration, which usually covers the entire body and fins. The intensity of the red color can vary, but it is typically vibrant and uniform.
    • Fins: The hallmark of the Super Delta Betta is its tail, which opens to an impressive spread that is less than a Halfmoon but wider than a traditional Delta tail. The tail usually spreads between 120 to 180 degrees, giving the fish a striking, fan-like appearance when flaring. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins also have a flowing, elongated appearance that complements the tail.
    • Shape: Male Super Delta Bettas have long, flowing fins that, combined with their vivid coloration, give them an elegant and regal look.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Like all male bettas, the Red Mascot Super Delta is territorial and aggressive toward other males or fish with long, flowing fins. They will flare their gills and fins to assert dominance and are prone to attacking other males if housed together. Despite their aggression toward other bettas, they can be interactive and responsive to their owners.
  • Activity Level: Red Mascot Super Delta Bettas are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment. They are known to flare their fins when they see their reflection, displaying their full, majestic fin span.
  • Community Behavior: While aggressive toward other male bettas, the Red Mascot Super Delta can be housed with peaceful tankmates that won’t provoke aggression or fin-nipping. However, they are best kept alone or with carefully selected companions.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 10 liters (2.5 gallons) is recommended for a single Red Mascot Super Delta Betta, though a larger tank (20 liters or more) is ideal for better water quality and more space for swimming. If housed in a community tank, at least 40 liters (10 gallons) is recommended.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Super Delta Bettas thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: Slightly acidic to neutral water is preferred, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-8 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft, sandy substrate is recommended. Red Mascot Super Delta Bettas appreciate a well-decorated tank with live plants like Java fern, Anubias, or floating plants like frogbit. These provide shelter and reduce stress, while also enhancing the natural beauty of the tank. Smooth rocks and driftwood can also be added, but avoid sharp decorations that could damage their delicate fins.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal for highlighting their vibrant colors. Floating plants can help diffuse the light and create shaded areas, mimicking their natural habitat.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as strong water currents can stress bettas and cause damage to their fins. A sponge filter or low-flow filter is ideal for maintaining water quality without disturbing their swimming. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential to keep the tank clean and prevent disease.

Diet:

  • Red Mascot Super Delta Bettas are carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet to maintain their health and vibrant coloration. Their diet should include:
    • Pellets: High-quality betta-specific pellets or micro-pellets should form the staple of their diet. These pellets are designed to meet their nutritional needs.
    • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety. These foods also help enhance their vibrant colors.
    • Occasional Treats: Freeze-dried bloodworms or tubifex worms can be offered occasionally, but they should not make up the main diet, as they can cause bloating if overfed.

Tankmates:

  • Red Mascot Super Delta Bettas can be housed in community tanks with peaceful tankmates that won’t provoke them or nip at their fins. Suitable tankmates include:
    • Small, peaceful fish: Such as Neon Tetras, Harlequin Rasboras, or Ember Tetras.
    • Bottom-dwellers: Corydoras catfish or Kuhli loaches, which tend to stay at the bottom of the tank and avoid interaction with the betta.
    • Shrimp or snails: Peaceful invertebrates like Amano shrimp, Cherry shrimp, or Nerite snails can coexist with bettas and help keep the tank clean.

Breeding:

  • Breeding Super Delta Bettas follows the same process as breeding other bettas, but it requires careful preparation.
    • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with shallow water (about 15 cm or 6 inches deep) is recommended. The water should be warm (26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-6.5). Provide floating plants or a bubble nest-friendly surface, such as a piece of Styrofoam, for the male to build his nest.
    • Spawning Behavior: The male will court the female and guide her to the bubble nest. After spawning, the male will guard the eggs in the bubble nest until they hatch, which typically takes 24-48 hours.
    • Fry Care: Once the fry become free-swimming, the male should be removed to prevent him from eating the fry. The fry can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Fin Care: The long fins of Red Mascot Super Delta Bettas are prone to damage, especially in tanks with sharp decorations or strong currents. Regular water changes and maintaining clean water are essential to prevent fin rot and infections.
  • Aggression: Male Red Mascot Super Delta Bettas are territorial and should not be housed with other males or aggressive fish. Even in a community tank, careful observation is necessary to ensure the betta does not become overly aggressive toward tankmates.
