Celebes Rainbowfish

The Celebes Rainbowfish (*Marosatherina ladigesi*) is an eye-catching freshwater fish native to the waters of Sulawesi, Indonesia. This species is highly regarded in the aquarium hobby for its vibrant colours and peaceful nature, making it an attractive addition to community tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Celebes Rainbowfish typically grow to about 8-10 cm (3-4 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: They are characterised by their striking iridescent blue and green bodies, often with yellow and orange accents on the fins. Males tend to display brighter colours than females.
  • Fins: Their fins are relatively long and flowing, adding to their graceful appearance. The dorsal fin is particularly prominent in males.
  • Shape: The body is elongated and laterally compressed, a common trait among rainbowfish species.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Celebes Rainbowfish are generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of tankmates. They are social fish and thrive in groups.
  • Activity Level: These fish are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their surroundings, often seen darting about in the tank.
  • Community Behavior: They should be kept in schools of at least six individuals to promote natural behaviour and social interaction.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 80 litres (20 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Celebes Rainbowfish, though larger tanks are preferable for stable water conditions.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Celebes Rainbowfish thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5 to 15 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft, sandy substrate is ideal. Celebes Rainbowfish appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots, using live plants such as Java fern, Anubias, and floating plants to provide cover.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable for showcasing their colours, with floating plants helping to create shaded areas.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as strong currents can stress these fish. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are important for maintaining a clean environment.

Diet:

Celebes Rainbowfish are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality tropical fish pellets should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: Including blanched vegetables, such as spinach or zucchini, can help ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

Celebes Rainbowfish can be housed with various peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Rummy Nose Tetras.
  • Peaceful Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras.
  • Bottom-Dwellers: Corydoras catfish or other peaceful bottom-dwellers.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species or fin-nippers, as this can lead to stress or injury.

Breeding:

Breeding Celebes Rainbowfish can be rewarding and relatively straightforward under the right conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with shallow water (about 10-15 cm or 4-6 inches) is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-6.5).
  • Spawning Behavior: The male will court the female, guiding her to the spawning site. After spawning, the parents should be removed to prevent them from eating the eggs.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of Celebes Rainbowfish.
  • Jumping Behavior: These fish can be skittish and may jump out of the aquarium. Providing a secure lid or cover is recommended to prevent this behaviour.
