Honey Dwarf Gourami

The Honey Dwarf Gourami (*Trichopodus species*) is a small, brightly coloured freshwater fish popular among aquarists for its peaceful nature and attractive appearance. Native to the shallow waters of Southeast Asia, particularly in countries like Thailand and India, this gourami is an excellent choice for community tanks and small aquariums.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Honey Dwarf Gouramis typically grow to about 5-6 cm (2-2.4 inches) in length, making them one of the smaller gourami species.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: The body of the Honey Dwarf Gourami is a beautiful golden or honey-yellow colour, often adorned with iridescent blue or green spots, particularly in males.
    • Fins: Their fins are generally transparent with a hint of colour, and males may display more vibrant hues than females.
  • Shape: They have a rounded body shape with a laterally compressed form, giving them a delicate appearance in the water.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Honey Dwarf Gouramis are generally peaceful and can be kept in community tanks with other non-aggressive species. Males can be territorial, especially during breeding.
  • Activity Level: They are moderately active swimmers, often seen exploring their environment or grazing on algae and plant matter.
  • Community Behaviour: While generally peaceful, males may display aggression towards each other, particularly in smaller tanks. It’s best to keep them in groups or with other peaceful species to reduce stress.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Honey Dwarf Gouramis, although larger tanks provide more swimming space.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Honey Dwarf Gouramis thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 3-10 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A soft, sandy substrate is recommended. Honey Dwarf Gouramis appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots, such as live plants like Java fern, Anubias, and floating plants that provide cover.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is best for showcasing their vibrant colours without stressing them. Floating plants can help diffuse the light and create shaded areas.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as strong currents can stress these fish. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential to maintain good water quality.

Diet:

Honey Dwarf Gouramis are omnivorous and require a varied diet to maintain their health and vibrant colours. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality omnivore pellets or flakes should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: Occasional plant-based foods, such as spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables, should be offered to ensure a balanced diet.

Feed them 2-3 times daily, providing only as much food as they can consume in a few minutes to avoid overfeeding and maintain water quality.

Tankmates:

Honey Dwarf Gouramis can be housed with a variety of peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small, peaceful fish: Such as Neon Tetras, Rasboras, and small Danios.
  • Bottom-dwellers: Corydoras catfish or similar species that occupy the lower regions of the tank.
  • Shrimp or snails: Peaceful invertebrates like Amano shrimp or Nerite snails can coexist with Honey Dwarf Gouramis.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species, as well as larger fish that may see them as prey.
