The German Ram
The German Ram (*Mikrogeophagus ramirezi*), also known as the **Blue Ram** or **Ram Cichlid**, is a vibrant and popular freshwater fish native to the rivers and lakes of South America, particularly the Orinoco River basin in Venezuela and Colombia. Known for its stunning colors and peaceful demeanor, the German Ram is a favorite among aquarists seeking an attractive addition to their community tanks.
Physical Characteristics:
- Size: German Rams typically grow to about 5-7 cm (2-2.8 inches) in length.
- Coloration:
- Body: They are known for their bright blue and yellow coloration, with blue scales that can shimmer in the light. The body may also have shades of gold, particularly around the fins.
- Fins: Their fins are elongated and beautifully colored, often showing red or orange accents, particularly in males.
- Shape: German Rams have a rounded body shape that is characteristic of many dwarf cichlids.
Behavior:
- Temperament: German Rams are generally peaceful and can be kept in community tanks with other non-aggressive species. However, males may show territorial behavior, especially during breeding.
- Activity Level: They are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment, often darting in and out of hiding spots.
- Community Behavior: While typically peaceful, they can become slightly aggressive during breeding. Providing plenty of hiding spots can help mitigate any potential conflicts.
Aquarium Care:
- Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 80 liters (20 gallons) is recommended for a small group of German Rams, allowing enough space for swimming and establishing territories.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: German Rams thrive in warmer water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
- pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
- Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5-15 dGH, is ideal.
- Tank Setup:
- Substrate and Decorations: A soft, sandy substrate is recommended, as German Rams enjoy sifting through the substrate. They appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots using plants like Java fern and Anubias.
- Lighting: Moderate lighting is best, as it mimics their natural habitat. Floating plants can help diffuse the light.
- Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended to maintain clean water without creating strong currents that could stress the fish.
Diet:
- German Rams are omnivorous and require a varied diet to stay healthy. Their diet should include:
- Pellets: High-quality cichlid pellets should form the staple of their diet.
- Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
- Vegetables: Blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach can be included for additional nutrition.
Tankmates:
- German Rams can be housed with various peaceful tankmates, including:
- Small, peaceful fish: Such as Tetras, Rasboras, Guppies , Angelfish and Discus.
- Other cichlids: Dwarf cichlids like Apistogramma or similar-sized peaceful species.
- Bottom-dwellers: Corydoras catfish or other small, non-aggressive bottom feeders.
- Avoid housing them with aggressive or fin-nipping species that may stress or harm the Rams.
