Red Peacock Cichlid

The Red Peacock Cichlid is a visually striking freshwater fish known for its vibrant red and orange coloration. Native to Lake Malawi in Africa, this species is a favourite among aquarists for its stunning appearance and relatively peaceful nature, making it an excellent choice for community tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Red Peacock Cichlids typically grow to about 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) in length.
  • Coloration:
    • Body: These cichlids are renowned for their bright red or orange body colour, which can vary in intensity depending on the individual and environmental factors.
    • Fins: The fins of the Red Peacock Cichlid are often brightly coloured, complementing the body and enhancing their overall vibrant appearance.
    • Shape: They have a streamlined body with a slightly rounded shape, which is characteristic of many cichlid species.

Behaviour:

  • Temperament: The Red Peacock Cichlid is generally peaceful compared to other cichlid species, making them suitable for community tanks. However, males can be territorial, especially during breeding.
  • Activity Level: These cichlids are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their environment, often displaying their vibrant colours while swimming.
  • Community Behaviour: While generally friendly, males can exhibit aggressive behaviour towards each other, especially in confined spaces.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 150 litres (40 gallons) is recommended for a single Red Peacock Cichlid, with larger tanks preferred for groups or community setups.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Red Peacock Cichlids thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly alkaline water, with a pH range of 7.5 to 8.5.
    • Hardness: Moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 10-15 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A sandy substrate is recommended, along with plenty of hiding spots created by rocks, caves, and driftwood. Live plants can be included, but be prepared for them to be uprooted.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is best, allowing for areas of shade and cover.
    • Filtration: A robust filtration system is essential, as Red Peacock Cichlids produce a significant amount of waste. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are also important for maintaining water quality.

Diet:

Red Peacock Cichlids are omnivorous and require a balanced diet to thrive:

  • Pellets: High-quality cichlid pellets should form the staple of their diet, as these are formulated to meet their nutritional needs.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetation: They can also benefit from plant matter, such as spirulina flakes or blanched vegetables, as part of their diet.

Tankmates:

Red Peacock Cichlids can be housed with a variety of tankmates, provided they are compatible:

  • Large Cichlids: Other non-aggressive cichlids that share similar water parameters.
  • Catfish: Species like Synodontis or larger plecos can coexist well.
  • Bottom-Dwellers: Robust bottom-dwellers like larger loaches can also be suitable tankmates.

Breeding:

Breeding Red Peacock Cichlids can be rewarding:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank of about 150 litres (40 gallons) with a flat surface for laying eggs is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly alkaline.
  • Spawning Behaviour: The female will lay eggs on a flat surface, and both parents will guard the eggs and fry.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Maintaining clean water is crucial for the health of Red Peacock Cichlids. Regular water changes and monitoring parameters are essential.
  • Aggression: As Red Peacocks can be territorial, it’s important to carefully select tankmates and monitor their behaviour.
