Leleupi Cichlid

The Leleupi Cichlid (*Neolamprologus leleupi*), commonly referred to as the Lemon Cichlid, is a beautiful and vibrant species native to the rocky shorelines of Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Known for its bright yellow coloration, the Leleupi Cichlid adds a splash of colour to any aquarium and is a popular choice among hobbyists who appreciate its striking appearance and relatively peaceful nature compared to other cichlid species.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Leleupi Cichlids typically grow to about 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) in length, with males being slightly larger than females.
  • Coloration: These cichlids are most recognised for their vibrant yellow body colour, which can range from pale yellow to a deeper, almost gold hue. Some individuals may have a subtle orange tint, especially on the fins.
  • Fins: The fins of the Leleupi Cichlid are long and flowing, with the dorsal fin extending from the middle of the back to near the tail. The anal and pectoral fins are similarly elongated and contribute to their graceful swimming style.
  • Shape: The body of the Leleupi Cichlid is slender and elongated, allowing it to navigate easily through rocky crevices. Its streamlined body shape enhances its agility and speed.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Leleupi Cichlids are generally peaceful, though they can be territorial, especially during breeding. They can be kept in a community tank with other peaceful species, though care should be taken to avoid overly aggressive tankmates.
  • Activity Level: These cichlids are moderately active and enjoy swimming through the water, exploring their surroundings and hiding in crevices. They are particularly known for their affinity for rock formations and caves.
  • Community Behavior: While not overly aggressive, Leleupi Cichlids may become territorial, particularly when breeding. They are best housed with other peaceful African cichlids or compatible species that share similar water conditions.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 100 liters (26 gallons) is recommended for a single Leleupi Cichlid, though larger tanks (200 liters or 53 gallons) are ideal if housing a pair or multiple individuals.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Leleupi Cichlids thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly alkaline water with a pH range of 7.5 to 8.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 8-15 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A rocky substrate with plenty of hiding spots is recommended. Leleupi Cichlids enjoy exploring caves and crevices, so include rocks, driftwood, and other decorations that provide shelter. A sandy substrate mimics their natural habitat.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal for these cichlids. Providing some shaded areas with plants or rocks can help simulate their natural environment.
    • Filtration: A strong filtration system is recommended to maintain water quality. These cichlids are sensitive to poor water conditions, so regular water changes (20% weekly) will help keep the environment healthy.

Diet:

The Leleupi Cichlid is omnivorous and requires a varied diet to thrive. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality cichlid pellets should form the staple of their diet. Sinking pellets are preferred to encourage natural foraging behaviour.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: Including blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini can help balance their diet and ensure proper nutrition.

Tankmates:

Leleupi Cichlids are peaceful, but they can be territorial. Suitable tankmates include:

  • Other Peaceful Cichlids: Such as smaller African cichlids like the Julidochromis or other Tanganyikan species.
  • Non-Aggressive Catfish: Such as Synodontis catfish or other peaceful bottom-dwellers.

Avoid housing them with larger or overly aggressive species, as they may become stressed or harmed.

Breeding:

Breeding Leleupi Cichlids can be an exciting experience, though it requires a stable environment and suitable conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with flat rocks or ceramic surfaces for egg-laying is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly alkaline (pH 7.5-8.0).
  • Spawning Behavior: The male will court the female by displaying vibrant colours and swimming in circles around her. Once the female is ready, she will lay her eggs on a flat surface, and the male will fertilise them. Both parents will guard the eggs and the fry until they hatch.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp. The parents should be closely monitored to ensure they do not harm the fry.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of Leleupi Cichlids.
  • Shy Nature: These cichlids can be shy, especially in the presence of more aggressive species. Providing plenty of hiding spots will help them feel secure.
