Physical Characteristics:

• Size: Red Rili Shrimp typically grow to about 3-5 cm (1.2-2 inches) in length.
• Coloration: They are characterised by their red segments, which can vary in intensity, and clear areas that give them a unique rili pattern. This distinct appearance makes them stand out in both planted and community tanks.
• Body Shape: The body is elongated and slightly flattened, typical of the Neocaridina genus.

Behaviour:

• Temperament: Red Rili Shrimp are generally peaceful and can coexist with a variety of non-aggressive tankmates. They are social creatures that thrive in groups.
• Activity Level: These shrimp are moderately active and can often be seen scavenging for food and exploring their environment.
• Community Behaviour: They can be housed in community tanks, but care should be taken to select peaceful tankmates that will not prey on them.

Aquarium Care:

• Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 20 litres (5 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Red Rili Shrimp, though larger tanks are preferable for stability.
• Water Parameters:
  • Temperature: Red Rili Shrimp thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F).
  • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 4-8 dGH, is ideal.
• Tank Setup:
  • Substrate and Decorations: A soft substrate is ideal, such as sand or fine gravel. Red Rili Shrimp appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots, as live plants and decorations provide cover and mimic their natural habitat.
  • Lighting: Moderate lighting is best for promoting plant growth while not stressing the shrimp.
  • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as strong currents can stress shrimp. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are essential for maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

Diet:

Red Rili Shrimp are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive:

• Specialised Shrimp Food: High-quality shrimp pellets or granules formulated specifically for dwarf shrimp should form the staple of their diet.
• Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms to provide essential protein and variety.

Tankmates:

Red Rili Shrimp can be housed with various peaceful tankmates, including:

• Other Shrimp: Other peaceful shrimp species, such as Amano Shrimp.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species or larger fish that may see them as prey.

Breeding:

Breeding Red Rili Shrimp can be rewarding and relatively straightforward under the right conditions:

• Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with stable water parameters is ideal. The water should be warm (around 22°C to 26°C or 72°F to 79°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.5-7.5).
• Spawning Behaviour: Female Red Rili Shrimp carry eggs until they hatch, typically requiring good water quality and appropriate conditions for the larvae to thrive.
• Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed infusoria or finely crushed food suitable for shrimp.
