Turquoise Rainbowfish

The Turquoise Rainbowfish (*Glossolepis incisus*) is a stunning freshwater species known for its vibrant colours and lively behaviour. Native to the rivers and lakes of Papua New Guinea, this species is particularly admired in the aquarium hobby for its striking turquoise body, making it a beautiful addition to community tanks.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: Turquoise Rainbowfish typically grow to about 10-12 cm (4-4.7 inches) in length.
  • Coloration: They are characterised by their bright turquoise bodies, which often feature hints of yellow and red on their fins and in breeding males.
  • Fins: Their fins are moderately long and may display vibrant colours, especially during the breeding season.
  • Shape: The body is streamlined and laterally compressed, which is typical among rainbowfish species.

Behavior:

  • Temperament: Turquoise Rainbowfish are generally peaceful and social fish that thrive in groups. They are best kept in schools of at least six individuals to encourage natural behaviour and reduce stress.
  • Activity Level: These fish are active swimmers, often seen darting around the aquarium. They display natural schooling behaviour, which is best appreciated in larger groups.
  • Community Behavior: They are suitable for community tanks with other peaceful species, making them a great addition to a mixed aquarium setting.

Aquarium Care:

  • Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 40 litres (10 gallons) is recommended for a small group of Turquoise Rainbowfish, with larger tanks being preferable for more stable water conditions.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: Turquoise Rainbowfish thrive in warm water, with an ideal temperature range of 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
    • pH: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5.
    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5 to 15 dGH, is ideal.
  • Tank Setup:
    • Substrate and Decorations: A fine substrate is recommended. Turquoise Rainbowfish enjoy a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots, using live plants such as Java fern, Vallisneria, and floating plants for cover.
    • Lighting: Moderate lighting is suitable for showcasing their colours, with floating plants helping to create shaded areas.
    • Filtration: A gentle filtration system is recommended, as strong currents can stress these fish. Regular water changes (about 20% weekly) are important for maintaining a clean environment.

Diet:

Turquoise Rainbowfish are omnivorous and require a varied diet to thrive. Their diet should include:

  • Pellets: High-quality tropical fish flakes or micro-pellets should form the staple of their diet.
  • Live or Frozen Foods: Offer live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia to provide essential protein and variety.
  • Vegetable Matter: Including blanched vegetables, such as spinach or zucchini, can help ensure a balanced diet.

Tankmates:

Turquoise Rainbowfish can be housed with various peaceful tankmates, including:

  • Small Tetras: Such as Neon Tetras or Rummy Nose Tetras.
  • Peaceful Rasboras: Like Harlequin Rasboras.
  • Bottom-Dwellers: Corydoras catfish or other peaceful bottom-dwellers.

Avoid housing them with aggressive species or fin-nippers, as this can lead to stress or injury.

Breeding:

Breeding Turquoise Rainbowfish can be rewarding and relatively straightforward under the right conditions:

  • Breeding Setup: A separate breeding tank with shallow water (about 10-15 cm or 4-6 inches) is ideal. The water should be warm (around 26°C to 28°C or 79°F to 82°F) and slightly acidic (pH 6.0-6.5).
  • Spawning Behavior: The male will court the female, guiding her to the spawning site. After spawning, the parents should be removed to prevent them from eating the eggs.
  • Fry Care: Once the fry are free-swimming, they can be fed with infusoria or newly hatched brine shrimp.

Special Considerations:

  • Water Quality: Regular monitoring and maintenance of water quality are crucial for the health of Turquoise Rainbowfish.
  • Jumping Behaviour: These fish can be skittish and may jump out of the aquarium. Providing a secure lid or cover is recommended to prevent this behaviour.
